Each tradition is summarized briefly, with information about its founder. There is a section breaking down the "Hallmarks of fill in the blank Spirituality", describing the charisms that make each order unique. Each chapter is concluded with a list of well-known members of members from that order, and a short bibliography of outside sources to consult for further information. All right, so my review.

This is a small book, and it does what it promises to do. I really wanted more in-depth information about the major orders I could have lived without the last two chapters but that's not what this book sets out to provide.

I did enjoy what I read. It did seem to me that the "Hallmarks" of each spirituality could often be applied to many others as well, and perhaps that is because the book truly just skimmed the surface. I loved the introductory summaries of each tradition. Some were very short, others were a bit longer, but both types of coverage were solid.

The bibliographies were also quite helpful. I am glad that I purchased this book and will have it on my bookcase as a reference.

Learning the virtues of humility and obedience to God and his representatives on earth now will save you a lot of grief and regret later. The foremost proponent of the Ignatian way in our times is not himself a member of the Society of Jesus, but his order was founded to preach Ignatian spirituality. It teaches self-knowledge and advancement in virtue. It is also an excellent guide for proper use of the Sacrament of Penance Reconciliation, Confession , which you will be encountering soon and which should be a mainstay in your life as a Catholic Christian, on a par with the reception of Communion.

The Sacraments do not belong to any particular school of spirituality, but are the property of the Church as a whole. Howard has highlighted his love for the Rosary. This prayer, in its current form, is a mainstream evolution from the Dominican school of spirituality. Also, as he points out, most Catholics do not follow a particular school of spirituality.

My own initial attraction to Catholic spirituality was focused on the Carmelite school, because that was the first one I encountered.

But my early experience of retreats was with the Jesuits, and I profited a lot from the carefully structured Ignatian approach. Now, some odd years later, encompassing decades of study in spirituality, I find myself appreciative of a variety of schools, and my long life experience allows me to find interior profit in all of them.

But I also know what feeds my soul, and Ignatian spirituality, particularly the more modern forms of it that the prayer retreat will be focusing on, will not suit my temperament. I suspect that in the end, it is more important that I pray at all, so from that perspective choosing a discipline that resonates well with my temperament has a better chance of success. The beauty of Catholicism is that it is miles wide and fathoms deep in traditional spiritual practices!
