The word "extinct" doesn't normally come to mind when thinking of inanimate objects, but Steve Stack has compiled a book of those "unsung cultural icons of society" that have gone the way of the Dodo bird -- from VHS tapes to cartoon characters. It is like having a small part of the Smithsonian or, in the case, I should say: British Museum right on your bookshelf.

Along with a detailed summary, each item is given a Dodo Rating indicating the degree of extinction. This is a great resource tool if you are a writer.

Editorial Reviews

Even if you were around before these items disappeared, the descriptions would be helpful to jog your memory and, perhaps, add a little more authenticity to your work. If you're not a writer, it's not only interesting, but also fun to read as the author interjects his own brand of humor into each description. As a bonus, Steve Stack has also set up a companion Twitter account, DodoFlip, to go along with the book, where he posts pictures and other media of additional materials. The iPad application, Flipboard, allows you to view the Twitter media in an online magazine format -- all very current 21st century!

I would love to display such a book on my coffee table and have my guests discuss all those things we've long since forgotten. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. If you remember sliding your home made mix cassette tape, recorded in silence from the Radio Top 40, into your Walkman and strapping your calculator watch to your wrist before disappearing to play unsupervised in the local park until dinner time, then the nostalgic appeal 21st Century Dodos will be a source of nostalgic appeal.

Subtitled "A collection of endangered objects and other stuff " this is a light and humourous tribute to the end of an era. At just forty it seems almost obscene that so much of my childhood is now obsolete - rotary phones, Polaroid cameras, 10c mixed lolly bags Cobbers were my favourite , school blackboards and roller skates but I enjoyed the reminder of these simple pleasures, and treasures.

It might hearten Steve Stack to know Australia still has Woolworths stores and my boys are currently participating in Bob-a-Job week though I go door to door with them. Not having grown up in England however there are a lot of things mentioned in the book that I'm unfamiliar with, retailers, television shows and product brands among them.

Do you remember a party line? And yet can now reach into your pocket, call a friend while listening to music and snap a pic to send to that or another friend in basically the same moment? Yeah that is pretty much anyone who can read this. Times are a changin' At a speed that a couple of generations are simply too stunned to notice. As smooth and comfortable the service is, you really don't want to consider how fast you are going.

You know, in case things go belly up. But the interesting things presented here are how many things have gone belly up to get us to this point. How many things we tried and either didn't bother to pursue or found a simpler way to achieve the same results. Stack gives us a fun irreverent book that still is much more pertinent despite that it looks at all these things we cast aside and let die a death that the author makes much more interesting than even many delivered before sent to extinction. As the Super Bowl approaches and the commercial hype builds well after all the other things it is fun to scan this again and wonder how many of the next big thing will go into a possible volume two.

21st Century Dodos: A Collection of Endangered Objects: and Other Stuff

The book is a memory, written by a person who wants us all to remember when we last dialed a rotary phone or had to listen to a modem. When the Marathon candy bar was renamed to Snickers, and when we last received a telegram Full of extinct or near-extinct items that were once part of our every day lives, this is a memory worth sharing with others. While many of the items and activities mentioned in here are UK-Specific, there are plenty of items that crossed borders so that even people unfamiliar with the UK will understand the references.

And even with the items that were extinct before my time and I'm 35, which seems to be part of the demographic the author is writing for the author describes them well enough so that you can picture your parents using them. If you're looking for a fun look at the past, I will recommend this book
