Growing up in south London, Holland took next to no interest in school, preferring instead to tinkle on the piano wherever he could find one and dream about seducing the beautiful local paper girl. It was a solidly working-class upbringing: But nothing is said of the family's financial troubles or the breakdown of his parents' marriage that saw him moving in with his grandparents.

Instead, the focus is firmly on the music - both playing and listening. The book is studded throughout with references to songs that moved him - listening to Sister Rosetta Tharpe on a 78 record with his mother or hearing the Beatles' 'All My Loving' on the bus. It is a little like listening to him reminisce over a cup of tea at the kitchen table, a series of cheery anecdotes and fond memories told with infectious enthusiasm. In fact, misfortune hardly features at all, only, it seems, when the story is already in the public domain and a reference to it is therefore unavoidable.

A very gentle look at a harsh world. Jools showed it is possible to be successful in a competitive world without being unpleasant about people.

Tigger-happy Holland

Loved the book with it's fantastic wit. Jools cracks me up and I so much enjoy reading of his life's experiences. I only wish more Americans would "get It". I suppose it's too sophisticated for wide appeal stateside - too bad, it's an enjoyable read especially if you're a musician.

One person found this helpful. As a memoir, this will not give you any great revalations. There are no skeletons in the closet and little to offend anyone. What keeps this book moving, is Jools' delivery which is real tongue-in-cheek. Not hilariously funny but will have you chuckling with each chapter.

Barefaced Lies and Boogie-Woogie Boasts

A light read, filled with music and dry wit. Only interesting if you want to know a little about Jools himself, who comes across as warm, engaging and has music running through his veins. This book is such an upbeat piece of work. Describing a variety of musical experiences, Jools Holland draws the reader in with his pure love of music and his sense of humor. A must read for any music lover. I don't just enjoy his music, but admire his talent and love for all types of music.

Without him we wo This is one of the only autobiographies I have read and actually enjoyed reading. Without him we would not see the New and up coming musicians of today as his show is the only one on TV today to show the talent that's about. We Love and admire all you do for music, someone give this man a medal, before he disappears from this world so that he can enjoy it and show his family he has at last got the achievement he strived for!

Aug 28, Donna rated it liked it. For a man who was in Squeeze and has met some of the greatest rock and rollers of all time I expected more. Some are good, some are bad , some are just stories of cocaine addiction. Now , if only the DJ's on the radio would talk about the music they play I'll stick with the books for now, I should have thought about the concept of talking about the music when I was younger. Might have made a career out of it. Jul 04, Chelsea Cahill rated it really liked it. A genuinely enjoyable book, even though I didn't know much about Jools Holland before reading other than the fact that he had been a member of Squeeze. He's a great storyteller, and even though I'm not terribly into music myself, reading about his enthusiasm was more than enough to keep me interested and entertained all the way through.
