I found this one to be rather boring, though, and often chose to read something else instead. There are other books in the series that are much better. I have been reading the Dev Haskell series since book one and I have enjoyed every one of them. This one was no different.

Fast paced action, interesting characters, good plot. This time Dev tackles a seemingly good guy who is very toxic to his relationships. To the rest of the world he is a pillar of the community. I didn't exactly like the ending as much as some of the other stories but after some reflection I thought it was really the only way justice could be done.

I do recommend this book, but anyone who has read any Dev Haskell will already know that it's a good book. I enjoy reading the cases of Dev Haskell. The characters are funny and well developed, many are serial. So, after a while, you look at them as family, however, crazy. But doesn't everyone have crazy family members? I mostly like the banter, the put downs, and the implied self-deprecation, all in up to date street language. Many times I laugh, uncontrollably. No matter what the plot is, always an enjoyable read. One person found this helpful. I enjoy the Dev Haskell series of mysteries.

I like the humor in the stories and keeps the pace up. One nice thing about this series is that you can read any one alone, they are not dependent on the earlier books. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Mr Swirlee

He is crude and a womanizer but still makes for an entertaining story. Definitely would recommend this series for people who like mysteries infused with humor. I can't get enough of these books! I love the characters. Though there is little in the way of redeeming qualities to any of them you still manage to have sympathy for them. You couldn't create a more perfect antihero than Dev.

Each case is as good as the last or better and I look forward to reading every one! I really think these stories would make a great TV show! The twists and turns, the snarky comments, Dev's "luck" with the ladies, his drinking hobby, and his persistence, luck and determination all make for a 1st class story. Keep up the great work! I just finished the book. The author is really good, loved the characters, but didn't like the one female's character with the foul mouth. The two flaws I found with the books was one: The author described every setting in detail, restaurant, office, clothing, furniture, etc, well done, but distracting.

I would like to write like he does, just leave out the fluff. This is my second Dev Haskell novel I loved it as much as the first. I kept thinking he felt familiar like an old friend. Then it hit me Rockford Files anyone old enough to have watched and loved that show will know Dev Haskell is a more exciting version of Jim Rockford.

Probably not what the author had mind just who he reminds me of and I loved the show almost as much as I enjoy and love reading about Dev and the scrapes he gets himself in.

Series: Dev Haskell

In this Dev Haskell adventure, Dev meets an ex -con at his friends car wash and decided he can't take her case. After she is killed he decided to investigate and see what he can find out. He ends up getting justice for Desi in the end. Loved the ending of this book; thought it was great even though a bit of vigilanteness. Highly recommend this book and the series. See all reviews. Softee is filled with mystery, menace, satire and comic-book kink as skirt chasing, wise cracking, dysfunctional PI Dev Haskell gets himself in over his head. Hired by local ice cream mogul, Weldon Sofmann aka Mr.

Softee, to find out who tried to kill him by ramming his Mercedes. The job should be as simple as a scoop of vanilla but what starts out as a hit and run, quickly turns into healthy serving of bizarre Rocky Road. As Dev investigates he learns that Mr. Softee is anything but. He's a ruthless 'entrepreneur' suspected of running a gambling operation from his fleet of trucks. He has a flash temper, a couple of man eating Dobermans, a mean streak a mile wide, a laundry list of people who want to do him in and a sex crazed girlfriend named Lola.

Unless said kid was trying to get a bet down. Dev uncovers a list of suspects that include the competition, a two ice cream truck operation run by the beautiful daughter of a man screwed over by Mr. Bernie hangs out in a bar called Dizzies. You could say Dizzies was a bit low on ambience, but that would suggest there might be some. Then there is his girl friend, Lola who may look like desert, but has a heart colder than a popsicle. Dev quickly comes to the conclusion that it was probably an accident and reports this to Mr.

But when Dev tries to invoice Mr. Softee he is assaulted and winds up arrested. Then the competition has their building blown up and their trucks torched and Bernie is found dead, taped to the rail road tracks and Dev is a suspect. Things go from bad to worse until Dev enlists the help of former client, sometime friend and felon, Tony "Dog" Colli.

Murder, mayhem, double cross and bodies follow in their wake. Softee is a bit darker and more dangerous than usual and Dev finds himself in over his head and on the wrong side of the law and wanted for a brutal murder. Instead of telling the police and laying low he enlists the help of an old friend, Tony "Dog" Colli. This was a fast-paced, quick read with mystery and suspense with a good amount of humor thrown in! The first lines of a book are so important. So far, you've got the reader's attention with the title, cover, and back cover blurb enough so that they opened your book.

Now you have to seal the deal with a compelling first page. One that sets the tone of the writing and pulls reader into the story. When I have to go back to reread the first sentence a second time to clarify what is going on, there is a problem. This lack of clarity continued throughout the chapters I read, so I finally stopped wasting my time.

The covers are the most interesting aspect of this book. Nov 28, mountainmama rated it it was amazing. Although these books are part of a series, they do not have to be read in order. For a fun romp, check them out! May 13, Lauren rated it it was amazing. This book is a tale of wrong place, wrong time and wrong client. Dev is hired by Mr. Softee to find out who tried to murder him. Little did Dev know he was going to be set up to take the fall for a bunch of crimes. The author did a great job making you laugh through the whole book. You never knew what Dev was going to do next! Jul 27, Tina Brimlow rated it it was amazing.

For me the books started of slow but as I kept reading it I just couldn't stop. It became interesting and I wanted to know how the book ended. After reading the first book in the Dev Haskell series, and not being impressed by the characters, I decided to read the second story in the box set and give the author a chance at redemption. Reading this book, I've come to the realization that Mike Faricy's goal is to satirize the detective genre.

As least, I hope that was his intention. If not, this series, and Devlin Haskell especially, is beyond salvaging. Haskell is hired by the local ice cream truck mogul to find out who tr After reading the first book in the Dev Haskell series, and not being impressed by the characters, I decided to read the second story in the box set and give the author a chance at redemption. Haskell is hired by the local ice cream truck mogul to find out who tried to kill him in an auto accident. Along the way, Dev discovers that ice cream isn't all his trucks dispense; it's a moving bookie operation.

The plot was more convoluted than the first story, and it was difficult for me to maintain interest in the story. Here comes the previously advertised spoiler, so stop reading if you want to. Have you ever read a book that had you literally screaming at the pages? If you want to, try this scenario. There is an awful stench wherever the main character drives. His professional opinion as a private investigator? It turns out, oh yeah, there's been a dead body planted in his car's trunk days ago. I tried twice to enjoy this series, but the outrageousness of this entire saga has seriously underwhelmed me.

I don't like having to post this low a review, but I cannot recommend this book or any of them. I grew up in the Bronx. Softee trucks, complete with annoying chimes. I guess in the St. Paul half of the twin cities they have Mr Swirlee driving parents nuts. Ice cream trucks seem innocent enough, but with the wrong owners there is apparently no end to their nefarious uses.

Devlin Haskell is just trying to make it through life doing as l I grew up in the Bronx. Devlin Haskell is just trying to make it through life doing as little actual work as possible while making enough money to keep body and soul together. Somehow, trouble seems to find him no matter how hard he tries to avoid it. And now we meet Dog, known only to his mother as Anthony Colli. As you turn the pages, you'll find this book hard to put down until the final bell on the ice cream truck tolls. May 10, Debbie rated it liked it. Because of that statement is why I started reading this series.

There is no comparison. I still don't like the main character Dev. I still call him a dumbass. His lady friends still need to be drunk to go to bed with him. He couldn't figure out what to do next, so had to rely on his friend "Dog". Yep, Dev is a dumbass. In the end, I still enjoy the mystery and reading the conclusion. I'll try the next book, but may not be able to continue if Dev doesn't grow up a bit.

Mr. Softee (Devlin Haskell Mystery, #2) by Mike Faricy

I'm enjoying this series. I was hoping for something a bit on the lighter side, but still a good story. This series is delivering. He just stumbles along and manages make it in spite of everything. I also like that there's humor in the stories without the bumbling stupidity of another series this one has been compared to. This book kept me interested right up to the end. Dev goes to see Mr. Swirlee, Weldon Swirlmann in the hospital he rules an empire of ice cream trucks. Weldon claims someone hit him on purpose to interfere with his business.

As Dev looks into the hit and run he gets further and further in trouble and people are trying to kill him. It only makes him more determined to figure out what is going on. A really good book keeps you interested. Apr 10, C. Knutsen rated it really liked it.

Another Dev Haskell mystery that was solved with the help of very interesting sidekick. It was difficult to see how Dev and his friend were going to get out of the fix they were in right up to the end. This is the second book in the series that I have read. Devlin Haskell has started to grow in me. He's no Myron Bolitar, but these books are fun to read. So I will keep reading the rest of this series.

May 01, Marcia-Lee Finocchio rated it really liked it. A PI name Dev, his low life clients, now the fun begins. I like these characters. They remind me somewhat of the G. M Ford's Leo Waterman books. I will definitely read more Dev Haskell mysteries. Aug 19, Laurette Long rated it it was amazing. Bills cascading through the letterbox? The cat just licked all the chocolate off your digestive biscuit? You need some serious Dev Haskell therapy. Set up, shaken up, beaten up, locked up, tied up, blown up, he still manages to land on his feet.

Mind you, he has some pretty impressive backup. Detective Norris Manning friend? His useful cop buddy, Aaron LaZelle. Long-suffering deep-drinking Heidi, she with decided benefits and an orgy-sized bed. His girlfriend Noleen, has a bad dye job, jiggling love handles, and a suspicious rash. Somehow, stumbling from one hilariously demented scenario to another, the heinous crime is solved and our hero emerges unscathed bearing in mind that everything is relative. Note to shockable readers: For the rest of us, make sure the pain killers are handy when you read Mike Faricy.

Your ribs will need them. This story opens up with Dev consulting a grumpy read mean old ice cream vendor and a voluptuous young woman he assumes to be the daughter but is not asking him to look into who tried to kill Mr. Swirlee the ice cream vendor. From mome This story opens up with Dev consulting a grumpy read mean old ice cream vendor and a voluptuous young woman he assumes to be the daughter but is not asking him to look into who tried to kill Mr.

From moment to moment you never quite know what the women in Dev's life want to do with him. He shares his 2nd floor office across the street from his favorite drinking spot, The Spot with Louie, the lawyer who looks rumpled and messy and uses a picnic table for his desk. Louie previously defended Dev and it won't be the last time.

Despite his appearance, Louie has a pretty sharp legal mind, when he hasn't been "overserved" at The Spot. Once again, Dev seems to always be getting himself in hot water and he should be learning that those sexy chicks aren't always what they seem to be. Homicide Detective Norris is back on the scene, always trying to hang something on Dev, and he makes himself an easy target. Since it's an ongoing series, it's always nice to remember that Dev does survive in the end.

Swirlee Dev Haskell Mystery 2 originally titled "Mr. Softee" by Mike Faricy Faricy writes a dandy mystery, full of action, danger, fun, drama, and colorful characters. Dev Haskell is not the brightest crayon in the box, but he is always well intentioned, and he certainly has a wide and diverse variety of friends. In this episode, Dev is hired by an ice cream business tycoon to find out who tried to kill him, but he has no clues for Dev, and all the evidence seems to point to a simple hit a Mr.

In this episode, Dev is hired by an ice cream business tycoon to find out who tried to kill him, but he has no clues for Dev, and all the evidence seems to point to a simple hit and run accident. However, Dev keeps digging and the deeper he digs, the more trouble seems to arrive at his doorstep, and the doorsteps of those around him. When said business tycoon turns up dead in the trunk of Dev's car, the chase is on, with the police chasing Dev, Dev chasing the tycoon's associates while they, also, chase him.

Who will catch whom first? Again, good editing and proofing, with only a couple of tense errors catching my eye. Good plotting, with lots of twist and turns, interesting side characters, and the inevitable race to the outcome. Swirlee was a typical Dev Haskel mystery story.

Once again it had lots of twists and turns to keep it interesting. The main character, Dev Haskel, once again found himself in difficult situations, and once again got beat up a bit. He still had good friends that helped him out, one was a new character named Dog.
