Fall of a Philanderer: A Daisy Dalrymple Mystery. But Daisy doesn't have that kind of luck. It seems that a local low-rent Don Juan has been busily seducing the local womanfolk and, in a town this small, no secret is kept for long. A fact that is amply illustrated when the Fletcher's simple picnic is interrupted by the discovery of a broken body at the foot of the cliff--that of the philandering local innkeeper of bad memory. Like Jacqueline Winspear's much praised novels about Maisy Dobbs, Carola Dunn vividly evokes the life and times of 's England wrapped in a classic mystery to delight her many fans.

Thank heaven the torrential rain had stopped. Perhaps the summer holidays of were not after all doomed to go down in history as a disaster of record-breaking precipitation. Belinda and Deva were well-behaved girls, but two days cooped up in a boarding-house parlour were enough to strain the best of best behaviour. One more game of Happy Families and Daisy would have run screaming into the downpour and thrown herself off a cliff. The pair had dashed off to the beach after a bare minimum of lunch, leaving Daisy to drink her second cup of coffee in peace.

She reached the knee-high drystone wall surrounding the back garden. The still air was full of flower scents, mingled with a smidgeon of seaweed, fish and tar. Red valerian and creeping toadflax sprouted from every crack and cranny of the wall; the top was a mosaic of gold and silver-green lichen.

On the other side, the wall dropped nearly four feet to the grassy track leading from the village up onto the cliffs. Glancing towards the village, Daisy saw Westcombe spreading up the hillside from the quay in a jumble of buildings washed in Mediterranean shades of pink, yellow, white and blue, topped with lichened slate roofs. Here and there a towering palm attested to the mild climate of this sheltered south coast nook. A man was coming towards her along the path at a jaunty stride, full of vim and vigour.

Pleased with himself and the world, Daisy thought. She placed atop the wall the ancient cushion the landlady had lent her. Sitting down, she pivoted to face the beach, bare legs dangling. With the approaching walker in mind, she tucked her blue cotton skirt—hemlines were scarcely below the knee this year—under her thighs before she turned her attention back to the view. Overhead, seagulls wheeled, crying, and a few bobbed on the ripples.

A pair of sailing dinghies slid past, heading for the sea. On the far side of the sparkling water rose a steep wooded slope. Where the inlet narrowed opposite the town, a patch of sand and a wooden landing-stage marked the far end of the ferry crossing.

The ferry was halfway across, its oars throwing up little flurries of white like bunches of lace on a blue frock. Once a schooner-building port, Westcombe was becoming known as a holiday and yachting centre. Now that the rain had stopped, Daisy could see why. On the other side of the track was a jumble of rocks, grey, black and rusty-red, and then the sandy beach where the girls were building a castle to rival Windsor. They were a study in contrasts, one plump and brown with black hair, in a yellow shirt and red shorts, the other a pale, skinny redhead in green and white.

Daisy waved, but they were too intent on their earthworks to notice. The stranger sounded like a gentleman and was unexceptionably dressed in a tweed jacket and flannels. Though he was tieless, his shirt open at the throat, that was surely excusable at a seaside resort. George Enderby, proprietor of the Schooner Inn, at your service. The cliffs are dangerous.

May 27, Maggie Hesseling rated it it was ok Shelves: I found this novel really dissapointing. It was less mystery and more travellogue. Which, in itself isn't bad, but I was expecting more of what I've come to consider a 'classic Dalrymple mystery. And though Daisy's information was really invaluble, here we really get to see how good an investigator he is.

But I wanted Daisy back.

I miss her stumbling over bodies and insinuating herself in investigations. I know I found this novel really dissapointing. I know that because she was with the children she let it slide, but I hope that after she gives birth this doesn't turn to a regular occurance. I want her a forward thinking woman who throws caution to the wind and just goes for it. Jun 29, Grey rated it liked it Shelves: This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

Her husband Alec shows up a while later and on the first day there they run across the body of the local Don Juan. There are any number of suspects. The mystery is on equal footing with the personal interactions in this one. I rather enjoy seeing how Daisy interacts with the children and how easily she fits in with a small village life. This was just what you would expect from a Daisy Dalrymple book. Characters a plenty and a new countryside scenery. Ended well, it was what I had expected and I think the right way as any other would probably have made people a bit sad. Apr 17, Denis rated it did not like it. As Daisy is struggling to disentangle herself from the obvious cad, Enderby sees Sid, a ragged, mute beachcomber and takes out his anger on him. Being a gentle spirit, the mute man "turns the other cheek" by turning around, bending over, and looking at the now-confused Enderby between his legs, which serves to turn away his bully. The girls, who already have made friends with Sid, are impressed, and Belinda clearly "takes Sid under her wing," to use the term that Alec uses for Daisy's behavior towards people she likes—whether or not they are suspects.

Dunn's environment descriptions are very good - you can feel the salty breeze in your nostrils - and together with some quaint and not so quaint locals and a somewhat dodgy fellow summer guest, you've got a good crowd of suspects.

The atmosphere might not be as strong as in the large country house-murders of the series, but it's definitely a smashing recreation slash over the cliff cozy-installment. I adore Daisy and her warm-hearted and sensitive way in approaching people and problems. She stays far away from local philanderer George Enderby, but can avoid him and his complications no longer when she, Alec, and the girls find his broken body at the foot of a very high cliff. Alec, of course, is assigned to the case, but Daisy refuses to be left out. She manages to insert herself wherever possible, determined to protect her protegees and discover the truth--even when it puts her in mortal danger.

I enjoy this series, which is much more lighthearted than the Maisie Dobbs or Kate Shackleton books, set at the same time in the same country, in the shadow of WWI. There are wonderful descriptions of Cornwall here, in all its changing weather and stunning scenery. I predicted part of the solution to the murder very quickly, though, which was kind of a drawback. Still, I thought the plot was well-structured, and all the characters were distinct and interesting. Right after Alec arrives they all go on a picnic where they discover the local ladies man, who has had affairs with a number of women, dead at the bottom of a cliff. The locals decide Alec's presence is a sign and call CID to have him given the case. Suspects abound including the owner of the house where they are staying, because the Mrs was one of the victim's mistresses and also a fellow house guest who had been asking some odd questions about the victim. There is also the spouse of another women and the father of a 16 year old girl, who was the last women he was carrying on with.

The 16 year old girl has disappeared. As usual Daisy provides gossip and Alec sorts out the useful facts. She also goes off in a rescue boat o help save someone trapped in a cave while Alec is off chasing leads. All in all a good mystery. There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
