His boyfriend doesn't seem to mind, but that relationship is strained, too. In fact, he seems to be more invested that does his lover. And it seems more and more that he's just a dirty little secret.

Series: Pearl Harbour Series

When he meets businessman Jason Qui and is hired for the evening, the attraction is immediate. But it's not a love match, merely a business transaction. Jason is to marry and run the family business. And use Tinder on the side. But a guy can hope and dream. Tinder's attacked one night by two men, though, and Jason comes to his rescue. In more ways than one.

Vagabond Heart (Pearl Harbor, #1) by A.J. Llewellyn

He proposes a business arrangement. But can Tinder abide by the rules? Or will his heart engage too much? With December bearing down, will the two have a future? AJ Llewellyn has written a beauty of a book here. The undiscussed world of Hawaiian prostitutes around the Pearl Harbor Naval Station is almost lost in popular culture, and deserves to be told. And told it is - with a huge heart and great sympathy and care. This is a book highlighting the tenderness and toughness that was required of those that chose the profession.

Add to the mix all the racial components and the sexual orientation issues, and this could be a red hot disaster waiting to happen, but it's treated with dignity and respect. Tinder is a sweet and wonderful guy, looking for love and being treated like a second class person at every turn. He just wants someone to call his own, and a little dignity. It's wonderful when he might find it. I liked Jason - he at first seemed a little cavalier, but he grew on me very quickly. His protection and fierceness towards Tinder forced me to like him.

This was a great read, and I look forward to reading the next books in this series. Jan 08, Blackravens Reviews rated it it was amazing. Vagabond Heart by AJ Llewellyn is a deeply moving and highly compelling novel that details life on the island of Oahu in the months preceding the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Hawaiian native Tinder McCartney is an unemployed architect who finds himself working as the lone male prostitute at the Midway Hotel.

Tinder catches the eye of local businessman Jason Qui, and their strictly professional arrangement is soon eclipsed by a personal relationship as Jason and Tinder begin to fall in love. All of the characters in Vagabond Heart are brought vibrantly to life as the reader is drawn into this gripping and fact-based novel. Tinder is a wonderful protagonist who is well-liked by not only his customers, but the many people he interacts with as he goes about his daily life. Llewellyn leaves his readers eagerly anticipating the next installment of the Pearl Harbour series.

Rated 5 Ravens and a Recommended Read by Kathy Jun 25, Kaje Harper rated it really liked it. The pages are full of intriguing details about the people, the lifestyles, the rules, the scenes. I was surprised at the way prostitutes were regulated - suggesting both an acceptance of their existence which was not always seen elsewhere and yet in return for recognizing them, resulting in a life that was constrained. They were even more limited than elsewhere where the sex acts were completely illega The biggest strength of this book is the fascinating portrayal of Hawaii on the brink of WWII. They were even more limited than elsewhere where the sex acts were completely illegal and yet the rest of their lives would be their own.

Tinder is an unusual MC, a little young and naive despite a college degree and work experience, kind of floating from one situation to another with a mix of intensity for some things and detachment from others. His immediate intense devotion to Jason contrasts oddly with his short-lived reactions to the situations with his first boyfriend Lauro. For me, the romance here took a bit of a back seat to the history, and the result was more interesting than deeply involving. Dec 26, Sandra Moreno rated it it was amazing. This book was truly amazing from the start!

AJ Llewellyn's attention to details and history is incredible. He wraps us up into this fantastic story of love and romance between these incredibly hot men and we are honored with the telling of his beautiful island paradise and all its wonderful offerings. This story was especially fascinating for all its facts about life in Hawaii before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and its horrifying aftermath.

Add in these two beautiful men in love with each other This book was truly amazing from the start! Add in these two beautiful men in love with each other trying to live life together and be happy I absolutely loved everything about this book and will definatley read it again and again! Nov 26, Belinda rated it it was amazing. I'm a lurker and don't usually comment on my reviews but this book is wonderful. I wish the second one would come out soon. I am haunted by the visual imagery and love even the background scenes of the Korean women shopping in the streets etc.

A profound book that touched my heart. Mar 16, Lamar54 rated it it was ok. I also "really, really, really' enjoy historical fiction. To saying I was jazzed about this series might be an under statement. So is Don Ho and the Duke knowing Tinder. The Don Ho interaction was cute, even if it did feel forced.

My problem comes when the historical facts are flat wrong. If Llewellyn had not made such a point as to discuss his extensive research, I might have been able to forgive him for some of the inaccuracies, but he did make a rather verbose declaration at the beginning of the novel. The first antibiotic was not created until Then Llewellyn had Honolulu under military control six months before the attack at Pearl Harbor.

Absolutely none of that was accurate. It was still under civilian control. No curfews, blackouts, censorship or restrictions on shipping goods from the mainland occurred until after the attack. These would be immediately put into to place and most were lessened after the Battle of Midway when it appeared the Japanese were not going to be able to invade Hawai'i. There was no fencing on Waikiki Beach until after the attack The team had even been giving rifles to guard the beach.

All members of the team were later inducted into Oregon State's Football Hall of Fame, even if they had lost the game to Hawai'i. In addition to the factual inaccurracies there was a major timeline problem in the story. Jason states he had been back several times to eat the sundae with other dates.

Also, the father and new wife were to move to Mau'i, but at one point Llewllyn indicates that it would be Kona, which is on The Big Island of Hawai'i and not Mau'i. In addition to Llewllyn resposibility with the historical facts, his editor must accept part of the blame. I would have given this story one star, but I only use that rating when I'm unable to complete a novel; hence, the two star rating. The story itself rates four stars. The poor reseach forces a two rating.

I purchase all three novels at the same time I never dreamed Llewellyn would write such a mess. Luckily, the next novels take place after the attack and military control with all its restrictions would have been in place; therefore, I plan to start Gypsy Heart with a hopefull outlook. I'm sure I'll be able to give it a higher rating. Jun 19, Gerry Burnie rated it really liked it. Gerry B's Book Reviews - http: The plot is somewhat unique, inasmuch as it deals with a male prostitute as a romantic lead. Moreover, the story is set in Hawaii, just before the Pearl Harbour invasion—an era that is particularly nostalgic for me—and this is where AJ shines.

His bio states his pass Gerry B's Book Reviews - http: Indeed, it is some of the finest descriptive writing I have encountered to date.

In this regard, the hypocrisy of government is almost as palpable of Mr. The characters are all well developed and interesting as well. Tinder is very much a boy of the s and 40s; meaning, when he found himself up against it he simply found a way to cope. I know the trait, because the s was my era as well. Likewise, I found the sex scenes—while not overwhelming—a bit repetitive toward the end.

Overall, however, it is a well written novel, with an interesting topic and plot, and encompassing an intriguing era. Four and one-half stars. Journey to Big Sky" Feb 11, Bookbee rated it really liked it Shelves: Hovering between 3 and 4 Stars So 3. I'm having trouble rating this book. I LOVE the premise But the reality didn't quite measure up for me. First my e-book copy had some serious formatting problems that had me wondering and searching for missing parts of sentences.

Second there were some serious historical inaccuracies that leapt out at me even though History is not my forte. Thirdly there Hovering between 3 and 4 Stars So 3. Thirdly there were time-line issues that threw me out of the story, making me question what I remembered reading just a few pages before. And me being me, I had to go back and double check. But most of all, I wanted to fall in love with these characters and it just didn't happen for me.

I liked them but that deep, crazy attachment that leaves me thinking about my favourite characters every time I have to put the book down, just wasn't there. It did sorta pick up near the end so I'm hoping the next book will make me love them like crazy! Jul 26, Daanquai rated it it was amazing Shelves: This story, told from Tinder's POV, was so real and told in such vivid detail, I couldn't put this book down till I got to the end.

Tinder is an incredible character. The way he painted his story, a male prostitute working during the time before Pearl Harbor was bombed, was so heartbreaking, the rules he had to live with, the uncertainty An absolute amazing read!! Nov 24, Teresa rated it liked it Shelves: I enjoyed the premise, and there were some hot scenes, but there were some serious continuity errors that brought me out of the story. Story ends in a HFN but I don't think I was enthralled enough to pursue the remaining books in the series. Mar 08, Sue rated it really liked it. A fascinating glimpse into an era and setting I know virtually nothing about.

Llewellyn has brought it to life, and handled the lives of the prostitutes very deftly, holding my sympathy throughout. Jul 23, Ambre rated it liked it. This book was OK. I found the sex scenes a bit distracting at times, they seemed to interrupt the flow of the story. The characters are fine but not memorable.

Dec 06, DL rated it it was ok. I would have liked this better if it hadn't seemed like an information dump. Putting in a reference to Don Ho was just too much. A good rule of thumb is that series have a conventional name and are intentional creations , on the part of the author or publisher. For now, avoid forcing the issue with mere "lists" of works possessing an arbitrary shared characteristic, such as relating to a particular place. Avoid series that cross authors, unless the authors were or became aware of the series identification eg.

Also avoid publisher series, unless the publisher has a true monopoly over the "works" in question. So, the Dummies guides are a series of works. But the Loeb Classical Library is a series of editions, not of works. Home Groups Talk Zeitgeist.
