Very disappointed in this 4th book. I've loved the previous 3 of the Darby McCormick series and was greatly looking forward to this one. It all seemed a bit farfetched for my liking and I was tempted to give up but then it did improve. However, the end seemed to be very rushed as it all came to a climax.

He left a lot of loose ends so there was really no need to have done this. I'll need to read book 5 when it's released to see if said loose ends are dealt with. It's all a little unbelievable and Very disappointed in this 4th book. It's all a little unbelievable and also harks back to one of the previous books in the story in the way it all ended up.

So I'm pleased I never read this one first or I wouldn't have bothered with the other three!! Jan 05, Gatorman rated it it was amazing. Wow, this book was even better than I expected. The best Mooney book I have read so far. A gripping tale of secret religious cults and missing children that starts off with a bang and only lets up somewhat in the middle before moving non-stop towards a tension-filled finish that leads one to believe the story is not yet over and will be continued in later books.

Ten years ago Darby worked on an abduction case where a young boy was abducted and never found. Now ten years later he is back and has taken his family hostage, he is asking to speak to Darby an Darby only. What happened to him in those ten years and why is he back now? This book is just as good as the previous three books in the series. This series is shaping up to be one of the best series I have read this year or in fact in a long time.

This book keeps me constantly wanting to come back for more. A quote on the front cover of the book says "Will keep you up past your bedtime" truer words have never been spoken, this book kept me up well into the early hours as I just couldn't put it down, I yet again found myself saying one more chapter over and over till I finally finished the book. I love reading how Darby's carer evolves and devolves and how her relationship with Coop grows throughout the books, I find myself desperate to know if they finally get together and if Darby will finally get the happy ending she deserves.

The cases Darby works are always really interesting and the book, in general, is very interesting, well written and keeps you captivated from the very first page right to the last page, it keeps you desperate to continue onto the next book to find out what happens next.

Jun 07, Luke rated it did not like it. Not even joking, it was just so awful The characters were half developed, the plot was uninspired but the worst of all was the writing Painfully wrought sentences reading like a middle school amateur dramatics society throughout the whole book and then the end just kind of trails of and implies there's a sequel. I really hope I'm wrong.

The tagline - "They'll make you wish you were dead" could not be more appropriate. Feb 01, Rob rated it it was amazing. Real page turner which, at some points, made me worry for the sanity of this talented author. A disappointing ending in that you were left wanting so much more, and I hope that is what mr mooney is working on right now!! Jul 02, Kelly rated it did not like it Shelves: I had enjoyed them enough to keep picking up Chris Mooney novels as I've found them.

Unfortunately I just could not get on with 'The Soul Collectors' at all, finding it bordering on the side of far-fetched and ridiculous. I really enjoyed the first few chapters, I was dying to know what happened to Charlie and who had tortured him in such a way. Who had done it? What involvement had his family had? I flew through the chapters quite quickly, even during the chemical attack.

Right up until Darby gets taken for decontamination and then the book seemed to grind to a halt. It became a repetitive cycle of frustrating events that had no real plot progression. Darby was written like a Angelina Joile look-a-like Bruce Lee. She was bringing down multiple men in seconds without blinking, she was ducking and diving and full ninja at points.

I don't remember her other novels with much clarity, but I don't remember her being action-woman. Her role just added to the sense of the ridiculous that was supported by the scale of the plot. The plot itself had started so well, but devolved into this frustrating series of events in which everyone was the bad guy and Darby was hunted and alone.

The fact that the FBI and army and such all seemed to be against Darby just really annoyed me and seemed so ridiculous. On top of Darby-Lee running round attacking everyone, I just couldn't finish it. Mar 14, Ellen Keim rated it liked it. My biggest complaint about this book is that there was no resolution. The whole book seemed to be a vehicle for showing how much of a fighter Darby is. Then there is her relationship with Coop. It hits a snag which seems weak.

But she seems to be in over her head with this book. I will probably read the next book mainly to see if the My biggest complaint about this book is that there was no resolution.

I will probably read the next book mainly to see if there ever is a resolution to this story. May 20, Shell Louise rated it it was amazing. I wanted to get straight on to the next Darby McCormick book but unfortunately, I don't have it yet: After reading the first four books in this series, one after the other, I feel like Darby is now a friend and I'm worried for her.

I need to know what happens next and I might have to resort to buying the books from Amazon rather than waiting for them to come into the charity shop! I'll be writing a full review on my blog https: Aug 27, Jenn Brouwer rated it really liked it. This book was riveting from page 1. I adore these characters and this author knows how to tell a story.

I would have given this one 5 stars except for the unresolved ending. There was such an incredible build up and then it just ended with no resolution. I was expecting the story to pick up in the next book to no avail.

Aside from the fact that the book felt incomplete it was a great fast paced novel with a unique storyline. Aug 13, Stoxy rated it really liked it. Got to be honest, I had to push on to get through this one. If anything I thought the end was something of an anti climax. I'll be back to read anything other books in the Darby McCormick series though! Aug 17, Colette McCormick rated it liked it.

Standard Darby McCormick fare. To be honest I struggled with this book for the most part but that could have been down to my state of mind. That being said, once it got to the last 60 pages I couldn't put it down even staying up till well after 1am to finish it. Aug 25, Kimberly rated it liked it Shelves: I actually enjoyed this thriller. I have never read anything by the author so I thought I would give him a try and I would definitely read another. It had a few slow moments but all in all, it was a pretty solid read.

Jun 27, melanie smith rated it really liked it. Will be reading others in series.

The Soul Collectors (Darby McCormick #4) by Chris Mooney

Jun 11, Melissa rated it really liked it Shelves: But where has Rizzo been held all these years? In all my yrs of book reading, I have never felt a book connect with me so deep that it's left me with such detailed visions and heightened emot Charlie Rizzo has his family at gunpoint and when Darby arrives to defuse the scene, she finds him horrifically mutilated, with a mask of human skin sewn in place over his own face.

In all my yrs of book reading, I have never felt a book connect with me so deep that it's left me with such detailed visions and heightened emotions before. Definitely NOT for the faint hearted that's for sure.

I know it is in the little box and the visuals are someone else's imagination. A book stirs your own and it did just that, but even just before bed, I couldn't put it down. The Soul Collectors presents as a very easy page turner with each chapter leaving me dangling on a thread willing me to turn the page wanting more. I have not read any Chris Mooney before. This being my first and looking at others reviews,I may have felt differently about this one had I read first.

It isn't a deep book and at times felt like it had been written by a high school grade in the early yrs but that didn't overwhelm the book, it was the odd page here and there. I chose to read this book due to the ease as it fitted in to my more intense study that I was completing along side.

I probably enjoyed this book more than I should have. What I did find odd and frustrating was the ending. It was pretty abrupt, like Chris Mooney, didn't know what to do with it, was in a rush and cut it dead as quick as he could. It left a lot of loose ends for me and an incomplete feeling. This did not ruin the main part of the book, it just disappointed me and felt like I'd been short changed. I looked back to see if I had missed a page or two but I hadn't. There is a little waffle in places, even unrealistic at times but it also had non stop action throughout and keeping everything in proportion made this book a good quick read.

A fabulous quick read that tugged at me emotions. This book is a dark thriller and quite disturbing in parts and I definitely wouldn't advise you to read it by bedside lamplight in the dead of night before sleeping. Twelve years ago, CSI Darby McCormick was one of the investigators in a child abduction case when Charlie Rizzo, the youngest child in the Rizzo family was taken from his parents. Despite an exhaustive investigation by local police and the FBI, Charlie Rizzo disappeared from the face of the earth — until now. Back from the dead and Full Review on my blog The Soul Collectors by Chris Mooney is a dark and complex thriller, disturbing in parts; the book will scare, entertain and chill you to the core.

Back from the dead and holding his family hostage, Rizzo places a call to and asks to speak to Darby McCormick, promising to release his family once he has told his side of the story. McCormick however is persona non grata with the Boston police. Darby, suspended three months earlier from the Criminal Services Unit after killing the police commissioner and two cops both hell-bent on silencing her permanently, is confused.

The novel was very well appreciated by all the readers as well as the critics. Chris Mooney was praised by the fellow authors for his hard work in bringing out a thriller novel. The novel was regarded as a razor-sharp thriller by well-known magazines and this motivated Chris to come up a number of other thrilling novels. The publishers, Penguin Books sponsored a contest second film making contest based on the novel and the winning film was allowed to feature at the Odeon Leicester Square, the biggest cinema in the United Kingdom.

The sequel depicted the plot where two girls are found dead in a river and two tiny statues of the Virgin Mary are found from their clothing. The murder is linked to the missing case of Emma Hale, whose dead body is recovered after several months. While studying the evidences from the Hale investigation, Darby comes in contact with Malcolm Fletcher, who is a former FBI agent and the most wanted fugitive in Boston, in connection to a series of murders. She gets into a deadly cat and mouse chase with the killer and uncovers links to the past, after one more girl goes missing.

It is revealed that the killer likes to speak to the abducted girls as their secret friend and kills them later. Emma Hale was a Harvard student and the daughter of one of the most powerful men of Boston. Her body gets recovered from the Charles river. She comes across deadly secrets while trying to bring the criminal to justice. Chris Mooney got the inspiration to write this novel from an image in which he imagines Darby McCormick to be looking through a Boston penthouse when the lights go off suddenly.

Darby turns around to find Fletcher standing behind her in the dark.
