So I decided to pick up this book because I mean, come on. Set in NYC about musical theater and a fake relationship trope? And although I flew through this book in a day or two, my expectations were ultimately let down. The main downf I just recently read The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, a book that revolutionized my reading and made me realize I should delve more into adult romance rather than grasping New Adult by the throat and begging it to give me new, unproblematic content.

Their fake marriage is literally illegal, but the story made the stakes feel so low. The plot of this felt cyclical and repetitive: For a story about characters skirting the law, there were such low stakes and the story felt so mundane. Plot-wise, this was just… okay. Like I know this book is playfully touching on Hamilton and the musical within this play mirrors its success, and so it was like the fanbase in this book was fangirling over the triangle player rather than any of the actual actors on stage like lin manuel miranda.

Particularly, and this could be a spoiler, I was so disappointed at how anti-climactic their first sex scene was. I almost wanted to stop reading it because it was so anti-climactic and irritating. What did I do? Even though some of the drama is petty and spurred by side characters who I wanted to flick away like an annoying gnat, the no-barriers approach to their relationship is so unheard of in romance and I definitely applaud that.

Once again, the transparency is so appreciated. Really loved it, I "tink" D Blog review by Jenny soon! This was just what I needed to lighten up my mood! This book was absolutely hilarious, surprising, romantic, fun, open-minded and more! I loved escaping into this book! I loved Holland and Calvin! They were awesome seperately but even better after their "nuptials". I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants! Anyways back to this awesome book, I loved the romance and loved the family drama. Holland was a hot mess but I just loved her! Calvin was completely a fiction husband to say the least!

I mean who can go wrong with a sexy guitarist who is uber talented and uber awesome. There's so much that goes down, but not too much. I am so thankful that I had the pleasure of reading this book and will definitely be checking out the authors' other works! Oh that's another thing, this book was written by two ladies and I had absolutely no idea and all I wanted was more! I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Jul 10, Riley rated it really liked it. I'm dying at how cute it was. Feb 07, Heather 'Bookables' rated it liked it Shelves: Holland has had a crush on subway musician Calvin for months who then saves her when she gets attacked on the subway. Recognizing his musical talent, she is able to get him his big break in broadway. Holland finds a crazy solution, she decides to marry C 4. Holland finds a crazy solution, she decides to marry Calvin so he can be in the show. Marriage of convenience turns into lovers, and maybe something more. But how can either of them know if this relationship is real?

I loved this book. By the end I was so in love with this couple and wanted them to find their happiness. I see a lot of reviews calling this book sweet, and I totally agree. But it did have small doses of angsty bits that gave my angst whore self the hit I needed to bring this rating up! Holland was an amazing heroine, unsure of where she was in life and yet not at all annoying. To me this was also a slow build romance, starting out strangers then friends then lovers, then finally more. Holland kept wondering why someone like Calvin, talented and amazing, would want to be with her besides the benefit of a green card.

This is a romance, so it all worked out, but I still feel a bit underwhelmed by the whole thing. A copy was kindly provided by Gallery Books via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I buddy read this book with my dear friends Rachmi, Trish and Kat ; Roomies offers a lot of good vibes. I love the fake marriage, quirky dialogue and steamy romance. Itt's less angsty and more lighthearted compared to other books Christina Lauren has written. Each moments were cute and it's impossible not to smile on it. It all started with Holland Bakker dropping by on the subway purposely just to see her crush.

She's mesmerize every time he strums his guitar and enjoys listening to his music. She never had the courage to initiate a conversation with him until one drunken night. Someone tried to rob her which led to an accident and the street musician rescued her.

He's an Irish-born immigrant residing in U. An opportunity to be part of the Broadway comes in with Holland's help, he cannot take the offer given with his situation. Holland can't see anyone who's more qualified on the spot but Calvin. As a solution, he asks him to marry her. How can I not love this book? It's addictively entertaining and the characters are so lovable!

Holland is a beautiful woman inside and out. She's genuine, selfless and caring. I cannot think of flaws about her because she has a pleasing personality. I love her and so as Calvin. He's a simple guy who's very passionate about music. I love he doesn't follow a rockstar trend and ventures more on the classical side. He never gave up on his dream to become a musician despite of the risk of being deported.

When he was in the peak of his career, he remained humble. He's charming and sexy in his own way. Their relationship blossomed terrificly. Holland and Calvin's chemistry blended naturally. They were so great together and it wasn't love at first sight.

It took a while for these two to fall in love and they shared a lot of awkward moments together. It's adorable and hilarious. Everything goes well between them because they continue to be passionate and inspire each other. They had low moments but they conquered it and helped a lot in the growth of their relationship. They're such a cute couple just like Holland's uncles Robert and Jeff I love them so much!! They're supportive and loving uncles to Holland. Christina Lauren's writing style improved over the years after their Beautiful and Wild Seasons series.

I had so much fun reading those series and I love the sexiness of it. Roomies is now part of my favorite books list and if you are looking for something lighthearted yet sexy romance, I recommend this book. View all 10 comments. Jul 09, Lainey rated it it was amazing. I'm off to a great start. Fake Dating Fake marriage, but same difference I loooooved this book.

It was so cute and pure. Dec 25, Khadidja rated it really liked it. I tink i love this so much and i also tink i want an Irish boy like Clavin. Roomies is a beautiful amalgamation of tender romance and elegant seduction, Christina Lauren deftly captivating readers with melodic musical theatre elements set against the cinematic background of a dazzling New York.

This story is by no means original when it comes to the romantic structure and pacing, but what makes this tale so mesmerizing is that the setbacks and triumphs of the characters are grounded in real-life details. Holland is gloriously real and instantly likeable, someone who feels as though she could have easily been us at one point or another in our life. While his relationship with Holland has an atypical start, his willingness to be a good husband and friend to Holland is infinitely sweet and endearing, earning our seal of approval as he vies for her affections, and making us root for their happily ever after with every sweet kiss given and countless sweet nothings whispered.

How could I possibly not fall in love with that? Overall, Roomies is Contemporary Romance at its best, Holland and Calvin winning us over individually with their dynamic personalities, but making eccentric fans out of us as they slowly yet beautifully progress from friends to lovers. As a first time reader of Christina Lauren, I think it is safe to say I cannot wait to binge read the entirety of their backlist.

It also has fantastic tension and conflict, not to mention a great chemistry between its main protagonists. Roomies is told entirely in Holland's point of view, which was great mainly because Holland is a character that you can't help but love. She doesn't have her shit together. One could say that she's privileged, which she is, but the great t 4.

One could say that she's privileged, which she is, but the great thing again is that the book acknowledged her privilege. You just can't help but root for her. And her painful crush on the hero was not only endearing, it's also very relatable. Calvin was a crush-worthy hero that I honestly couldn't blame Holland for crushing hard on him. What I really like about his character is that he's not the quintessential " alpha bad boy musician" hero I'm used to reading nowadays. He's a theater nerd, and I personally find that refreshing. He's very flawed, and his backstory is one that immigrants like me could relate to.

A better way to find roommates

And even if you're not a US immigrant, you'd still feel for him. I loved the marriage-of-convenience set up. Holland and Calvin started out as strangers and then friends until they inevitably became lovers. But things aren't as straightforward as it may seem. There's quite a bit of angst in this book.

Not too much though, just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat and invested in these characters. You want them to work out so bad but since they're not perfect characters, imperfect decisions were made. One other thing that makes this book for me are the secondary characters, most especially Holland's "uncles" Jeff and Robert. Their presence in this book was a grounding force for Holland. They're her rock and she'd be lost without them. I loved these characters so much I wanted to read more about them, preferably in their own standalone book. Roomies isn't a perfect book but the emotion it evoked was undeniable.

The romance, the banter, the sexy times It's a quick read, too. Once I started, I couldn't put it down.

It was that readable. So whether you're a fan of the marriage-of-convenience trope or not, I highly recommend this book. It's sweet and angsty with characters that you can't help but fall in love with. Apparently it was a pretty effective one too because the pretty pretty shiny shiny cover made me go take a looksee at what it was about. Basically, if you enjoyed this. You never know what might be waiting for you. Every time he brings me a cup of coffee with his crazy bed head and pillow lines on his face, it feels more real. Every time he holds my jacket for me to slip into before we leave the apartment, and kisses my cheek, it feels more real.

Dec 28, Maram rated it really liked it Shelves: Holland has been seeing Calvin for six months and by seeing, I mean, watching him busking in a New York subway. She has his schedule down to a tee and takes every opportunity to listen to him play. One night, a homeless guy accosts her and knocks her into the tracks. When she comes to in the ambulance, she has a bit of a concussion and a broken arm.

Calvin basically takes off. Determined to find out why he left, the next day she shows up and he takes off again. They get another chance meeting when her friend, Lulu, makes her accompany her to a hear a random band Finally, Holland gets some answers. She can't get Calvin's playing out of her head so she invites her Uncle Robert, who is a musical director on Broadway, to come listen to him play.

He is smitten as well so they set up an audition which Calvin kills. Then, they find out the bad news Calvin's in the country illegally, never leaving after he finished school four years ago. It's jokingly brought up that Holland should marry him and the more Holland thinks about it, the better it sounds.

She contacts Calvin and he's totally on board but wants them to date so they do. And it's sweet and a little magical. I loved reading about them falling in love and how easily they fit together. I also enjoyed reading about Holland coming into her own, I think that was really necessary. Naturally, there are some issues. There's just so much for them to know about each other that it's hard to fit everything in. And it doesn't help that they both are keeping secrets from each other. This very much had a Green Card vibe to the story I totally got Holland's insecurities and I don't blame her one iota!

I'm just happy the last one was so far off base! I really enjoyed the story I really wish we could have had Calvin's POV. And there was no flippin' epilogue I really loved Calvin and Holland and watching their relationship develop. They were both really quirky, sweet baby angels and fun to read. It was well-written and the setting of New York City was so vibrant and fun. This gave me the same warm fuzzies that my favorite rom-coms do. Definitely will be rereading this in the park this summer! View all 3 comments. This is one of those stories that just pulls you in more and more the further you read.

It got to the point that I didn't want to put the book down to leave for work and I was anxious to pick it back up as soon as I could. It did start out a bit slow. Also, Holland was a pretty awkward character. It took me a bit to connect to her but once the story got Calvin more involved, the pages just really started to fly by.

You get invested in these two pretty quickly. I was expecting this to b 4. I was expecting this to be more of a humorous story but it really was more emotional. It ended up being an unexpected read for me in a very good way. ARC provided by Netgalley. I liked the characters in the same way that I like my sofa, comfortable, easy but nothing special. Nick Chase Young is a middle-aged Marine drill instructor who wants something more out of life than what the military can give him, so he leaves the military and goes to college at Saginaw University. His roommate, Matthew Wiggins Haim , is young and bright but also looked upon as nerdy.

Every week, the two learn from each other mainly, Matthew learning from Nick and get past life's tough challenges. This show got a bad rap and wasn't given a chance. Both my mother and I thought it was a very good show. Definitely a change of pace. We especially enjoyed the four guys who would wander through the background harmonizing to very appropriate tunes Aspell.

They were very good. It dealt with situations that college students commonly deal with in a way that oft times is very humorous. TV execs are obviously looking at the demographics that have the least buying power instead the middle age adults with the most buying power, the Baby Boomers. I am sick an tired of the TV execs telling me what I like or what I'm going to watch. Kicking off a show after only a few weeks without giving a chance to adjust the writing or the character mix is totally irresponsible.

I looked forward to seeing Roomies. Too bad people who only enjoy drama, sex and violence rule our airwaves.
