One of sets, this set contains a page of original manuscript by Irving and an autograph note signed, both tipped in to volume one of The Alhambra.

The manuscript leaf is page of The Alhambra manuscript, with several deletions and corrections in ink. In the autograph note, signed "Washington Irving" and dated "Tuesday May 1," the author regrets not being able to accept an invitation as he is dining with "Mr. A very nice set. Engraved frontispiece, vignette title-pages, and numerous full-page illustrations throughout. Contemporary half green morocco, marbled paper boards, gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut.

Page 60 of volume III is missing its page number. The imprint at the end of volume III appears on page Volume 1 is a second printing of published by G. Puntnam of New York; volume 2 is a first edition dated also by Putnam with the note of error on page ; volume 3 is a first edition dated by Putnam lacking the "inserted slip with note by publisher"; volume 4 is a first edition by Putnam dated ; volume 5 is a Putnam first edition dated It is the second state as it contains the "spurious" notice on page of volume 2. It is the third state of the first British Edition which initially came out only a couple of days after the first US edition was printed.

Three of the volumes have a board which has fallen off due to severe edge-wear to the joists. Most volumes have at least minor edge-wear to boards and spine and slightly bumped corners.
