The first memory is of sliding down a snow-covered hill on a sled, pleasantness made shocking by the fact that Jonas has never seen a sled, or snow, or a hill for even the memory of these things has been given up to assure security and conformity called Sameness. Even color has been surrendered, and the Giver shows Jonas a rainbow. Less pleasantly, he gives Jonas memories of hunger and war, things alien to the boy.

Hanging over Jonas's training is the fact that the Giver once before had an apprentice, named Rosemary, but the boy finds his parents and the Giver reluctant to discuss what happened to her. Jonas's father is concerned about an infant at the Nurturing Center who is failing to thrive, and has received special permission to bring him home at night.

The baby's name will be Gabriel if he grows strong enough to be assigned to a family. He has pale eyes, like Jonas and the Giver, and Jonas becomes attached to him, especially when Jonas finds that he is capable of being given memories. If Gabriel does not increase in strength, he will be "released from the Community," also in common speech termed being taken Elsewhere.

The Circle

This has happened to an off-course air pilot, to chronic rule breakers, to elderly people, and to the apprentice Rosemary. After Jonas casually speculates as to life in Elsewhere, the Giver educates him by showing the boy hidden-camera video of Jonas's father doing his job: There is no Elsewhere for those not wanted by the Community, those said to have been "released" have been killed. Since he considers his father a murderer, Jonas initially refuses to return home, but the Giver convinces him that without the memories, the people of the Community cannot know that what they have been trained to do is wrong.

Rosemary had been unable to endure the darker memories of the past and had chosen release, injecting the poison into her own body.

Together, Jonas and the Giver come to the understanding that the time for change is now, that the Community has lost its way and must have its memories returned. The only way to make this happen is if Jonas leaves the Community, at which time the memories he has been given will flood back into the people, as did the relatively few memories Rosemary had been given.

Jonas wants the Giver to escape with him, but the Giver insists that he will be needed to help the people manage the memories, or they will destroy themselves. Once the Community is re-established along new lines, the Giver plans to join his daughter, Rosemary, in death. The Giver devises a plot in which Jonas will escape beyond the boundaries of the Communities. The Giver will make it appear as if Jonas drowned in the river so that the search for him will be limited.

The plan is scuttled when Jonas learns that Gabriel will be "released" the following morning, and he feels he has no choice but to escape with the infant. Their escape is fraught with danger, and the two are near death from cold and starvation when they reach the border of what Jonas believes must be Elsewhere. Using his ability to "see beyond," a gift that he does not quite understand, he finds a sled waiting for him at the top of a snowy hill.

He and Gabriel ride the sled down towards a house filled with colored lights and warmth and love and a Christmas tree, and for the first time he hears something he believes must be music. The ending is ambiguous, with Jonas depicted as experiencing symptoms of hypothermia. This leaves his and Gabriel's future unresolved. However, their fate is revealed in Gathering Blue and in Messenger , companion novels written much later. You don't need to ask that question.

While critical reception of The Giver has been mixed, the novel has found a home in "City Reads" programs, library-sponsored reading clubs on citywide or larger scales. Some reviewers have commented that the story lacks originality and is not likely to stand up to the sort of probing literary criticism used in "serious" circles, while others argue that books appealing to a young-adult audience are critical for building a developing reader's appetite for reading.

Johnson, Haynes, and Nastasis write that, although the majority of students said either they did not understand the novel or did not like the novel, there were students who were able to connect with Jonas and to empathize with him. Natalie Babbitt of The Washington Post was more forgiving, calling Lowry's work "a warning in narrative form", saying:.

The Circle Trilogy

The story has been told before in a variety of forms— Ray Bradbury 's Fahrenheit comes to mind—but not, to my knowledge, for children. It's well worth telling, especially by a writer of Lowry's great skill. If it is exceedingly fragile—if, in other words, some situations do not survive that well-known suspension of disbelief —well, so be it.

The Giver has things to say that cannot be said too often, and I hope there will be many, many young people who will be willing to listen. A study found that The Giver was a common read-aloud book for sixth-graders in schools in San Diego County, California. Subsequent productions of Coble's one-hour script have been presented in several American theatres. In the years following, members of the partnership changed and the production team grew in size, but little motion was seen toward making the film. At one point, screenwriter Ed Neumeier was signed to create the screenplay.

Later, Neumeier was replaced by Todd Alcott [23] and Walden Media became the central production company. Diana Basmajian adapted the novel to full-length play format, and Prime Stage Theatre produced in Actor Ron Rifkin reads the text for the audiobook edition. Jeff Bridges has said he had wanted to make the film for nearly 20 years, and originally wanted to direct it with his father Lloyd Bridges in the title role.

The elder Bridges' death cancelled that plan and the film languished in development hell for another 15 years. Jeff Bridges plays the title character [29] with Brenton Thwaites in the role of Jonas. Lots of action, interesting characters and interesting world created but I won't be continuing the series,. Nov 22, Abbey's 1 Click Book Blog rated it really liked it. The writting and the plot were good. And the characters awesomes. D'Angelo and Angel are beautiful, funny, hot and loveables.

The secondary characters are amazing too. Vixen , Jinx and Meggie, 3 super badass girls and super fun too. It was book 1 of the series, and the authors did a good job. I wasn't lost in the story and the background about the universe and all. I highly recommend this book. If you love "Supernatural" or "Poltergeist", you will love this one. I can't wait for book Dec 28, Keikanna44 rated it did not like it.

I'm a big fan of Nicholas Bella. I devoured those books. So you can imagine how eager I was to pick up his Demon Gate series. It ended up being a total let down for me. I struggled to get through it hoping it would pick up but it never did. I bring this up because even though this was written by Aimee Walker and Nicholas Bella, Circle of Darkness has demon gate series all over it. It's all over the place tonally and has the same boring plot and too much info dump! The demons, the cop-like team up buddy thing has got to go.

I was sick of it with the demon gate series and I'm fed up with it now. Is this the same author whose website is a dungeon and writes such steamy raunchy sex scenes? When I pick up a book from an author I like I should know what to expect. Lately all the other books I've read by Nicholas Bella seem to be written by two completely different people.

What is with this fluffy, lovey dovey tame nonsense?

It breaks my heart to say this because I am a fan of Nicholas Bella but I have to be honest. I wish he would just get back to New Haven and continue with that instead of these long winded basic side stories. I'm not sure how much of this was written by Aimee Walker but she's not doing Nicholas any favors in my opinion. I hope this team up doesn't last long. I'm happy for those who enjoyed this book but I wasn't one of them.

Here's hoping for something better in the future. There is a fine line in the land of paranormal books for me. I mean, I love a good, well written paranormal book but,,,,and there is always a huge BUT for me Be it the story, the character's, the author First and foremost, I am a fan of Aimee Nicole Walker, so I was hopeful that this book would hit the spot for me in both the paranormal genre as well as MM.

D'Angelo and Angel are, in their own right, pretty stu There is a fine line in the land of paranormal books for me. D'Angelo and Angel are, in their own right, pretty stubborn men. Angel is a psychic, and D'Angelo is a hunter. There are demons, vampires, and just paranormal activity in general.

Angel has a vision of D'Angelo dying, and, since they each feel this D'Angelo knows that there is something there with Angel However, the powers that be well I loved the banter between the two, the pairing couldn't be more perfect. Once these two connected there was no denying that they were mated for life. I enjoyed this story, and am looking forward to the next in the series. Dec 02, Jenn's Book Obsession rated it really liked it.

This was a very entertaining read. I haven't read anything of Nicholas Bella so I didn't know what to expect from the writing. I am a fan of Aimee Nicole Walker's and couldn't pass up on the read. I liked all the details and descriptions that was given. The authors did a great job of bringing to life a visual for me while reading with all the vivid details that was given of either the demons, monsters, the whole paranormal world or just in the whole setting of the story itself. It was like watch This was a very entertaining read.

It was like watching a movie play out in my head. The characters were great even though D'Angelo didn't start off to a very good start. Angel just had me from the very beginning with his adorable feisty little attitude. I loved the flirtation between these two.

What really happens to the plastic you throw away - Emma Bryce

The chemistry wasn't as charged as I thought it would be nor was there enough sexy times for me. This was really light on that aspect and more focused on the fighting demons. I would've like to see more development between the two MC's relationship and some more sexy times but that's just me. Overall, I think this was well written and really was an enjoyable read. I'm really looking forward to see what demons or monster are up for hunting in the next story.

May 10, Stacey rated it it was ok. Spoilers First of all there was really great potential. The world building was interesting and it was a ok plot. In the first couple of chapters you get a lot of information thrown at you and then you get the exact same information repeated again when D is explaining stuff to Angel. This happens a lot. All the characters spoke and argued like teenagers.

I could put up with Angel but D'Angelo's attitude really bugged me. He goes from not even wanting anything to do with Angel because he is a hunter Spoilers First of all there was really great potential. He goes from not even wanting anything to do with Angel because he is a hunter and must work alone, to deciding to quite Angels job for him and buying a him a box of butt plugs really quickly.

The way it was written just made it a struggle to read. At one point a demon actually says 'hahaha your race is so weak' and continues with some really bad 80s film, bad guy dialogue. I honestly haven't even checked to see if there is a second book but if there is I'm geussing it's about vampire hating Christian having to work with hunter hating Lorcan to find out who's killing vampires and them turning out to be mates? That is just a geuss from the heavy hints at end of the book. Aug 26, Beth rated it it was amazing.

There are a few things that are laid out and then left too vague. The epilogue does a nice job of building interest for book two and certainly confirms what I thought was coming based on other elements of the book. Going right into book two! Nov 25, Daria rated it really liked it Shelves: Nicholas Bella will always be the "it" for me I've loved everything he's wrote, it was the first time reading anything from Aimee Nicole Walker.

The colab was definitely a grand adventure, smooth throughout the story so that you couldn't tell who wrote what. A amazing combination of talents. Who doesn't love a good vs evil story? Step into the circle of darkness and be aware of things we only thought was a fairy tale. D sexy hot bull headed borderline donkey action hunter.

Ansel the angel of sor Nicholas Bella will always be the "it" for me I've loved everything he's wrote, it was the first time reading anything from Aimee Nicole Walker. Ansel the angel of sorts that throws a wrench in the best laid plans.

Gods, demons and dangerous statues Oh. Remember the old saying you gets nothing for free. A little shop of good doers all about keeping the balance, or at least the bad semi contained. Some tense moments in both business and play time, Love and passion added to the mix. Hot yummy scenes and awesome personalities of the secondary characters. Nicholas and Aimee Enjoy. One of the most thrilling rides I've ever been on! For their first time out, Amiee and Nicholas did a kickass job on this book!!! I loved every minute of it. Except for two things which I'll get to in a minute. I'm not usually a fan of paranormal books, but I will read this entire series and any others they decide to write. This book was that good! I loved how detailed and in depth the explanations were and I feel so connected to Angel and D'Angelo, as well as Lorcan.

It looks like his story is One of the most thrilling rides I've ever been on! It looks like his story is next and I can't wait. Now, about what I wish was different. I wish there was more sex because the sex they had was phenomenal! And the use of the word 'as' in place of 'since' or 'because' was really excessive. To the point that it started to annoy me.

Not enough to make me put the book down, but enough to make me lose focus. Other than those two things, I have no complaints. Not bad I absolutely love Nicholas Bella and I enjoy Walker's curl up and dye series so was excited to read this.

It had an interesting plot and was a good length. It was an enjoyable light read, very much on par with what I expect from Walker. But, I have to say that the story line and characters felt rushed and didn't have that usual Bella flair. But the book was still good which definitely attests for te writers skill For the story to feel rushed and shallow but s Not bad I absolutely love Nicholas Bella and I enjoy Walker's curl up and dye series so was excited to read this.
