Poe claimed to have written the poem very logically and methodically, intending to create a poem that would appeal to both critical and popular tastes, as he explained in his follow-up essay "The Philosophy of Composition". Poe borrows the complex rhythm and meter of Elizabeth Barrett's poem "Lady Geraldine's Courtship", and makes use of internal rhyme as well as alliteration throughout. Its publication made Poe widely popular in his lifetime, although it did not bring him much financial success.

The poem was soon reprinted, parodied, and illustrated. Critical opinion is divided as to the poem's literary status, but it nevertheless remains one of the most famous poems ever written. El poema se inspira parcialmente en la figura del cuervo parlante de la novela Barnaby Rudge de Charles Dickens. Pronto se hicieron reimpresiones, parodias y versiones ilustradas del poema. It made Poe a household name overnight though his great fame never brought much wealth , and the poem, a powerfully haunting elegy to lost love remains to this day one of the most beloved and recognizable works in the English language.

His frighteningly bizarre short stories include murders and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead. Adapted from a lecture he had presented, Eureka describes Poe's intuitive conception of the nature of the universe with no scientific work done to reach his conclusions. He also discusses man's relationship with God, whom he compares to an author. During his journey he endures shipwreck, mutiny, starvation and cannibalism. Arthur is saved by the crew of Jane Guy and continues his adventures further south, eventually reaching the South Pole.

It follows an unnamed narrator who insists on his sanity after murdering an old man with a "vulture eye". The murder is carefully calculated, and the murderer hides the body by cutting it into pieces and hiding it under the floorboards.

Ultimately the narrator's guilt manifests itself in the hallucination that the man's heart is still beating under the floorboards. It is unclear what relationship, if any, the old man and his murderer share. It has been suggested that the old man is a father figure or, perhaps, that his vulture eye represents some sort of veiled secret. The ambiguity and lack of details about the two main characters stand in stark contrast to the specific plot details leading up to the murder.
