Mar 20, Ruth Hastings rated it liked it. I would never had read this in a million years, but its a book club book. And I was pleasantly surprised. I don't think it was terribly well written, sometimes the stories were a bit flat, but it was easy to read and shed new light onto the excentric character I've seen on TV loads of times.

Before reading the book, I saw Steve Irwin as a quirky showman, but it was interesting to read about his passion for wildlife. Jul 13, Erik rated it really liked it. The writing isn't to die for, but it really gave me an appreciation for Steve Irwin. I found out he wasn't just a big ham for TV but rather a person who was really dedicated to preserving wildlife. Jun 20, Kim rated it really liked it Shelves: I really enjoyed this book. Terri's love for her husband and everything he believed in really shone through. Mar 14, ArialLily added it.

I have seen lionesses crowding a kill, dingoes on the trail of a feral piglet, and adult croc thrashing its prey to pieces. But never, in all the animal world, have I witnessed anything to match the casual cruelty of the human being. It feels wrong to rate such a pure and wholesome story, even harder considering the story is true.

I'm not sure what to say other than I thoroughly enjoyed it and was moved by the selflessness of the Irwin family. May 15, Shannon rated it liked it Shelves: I remember when the world was swept up in the fever of The Crocodile Hunter. I was not much of a fan. I thought the show was just another typical "reality show". I remember the baby Bob incident and I thought he was horrible for putting his child in so much danger.

I remember the Antarctica incident and thinking that he was ridiculous. This guy couldn't possibly be real. I remember hearing about his death and thinking, "That is sad. But we all knew it was coming". So when I started reading this I remember when the world was swept up in the fever of The Crocodile Hunter. So when I started reading this book, I admit wasn't especially thrilled.

But since reading this book, my opinion has changed a great deal.

Frequently bought together

Terri sharing her memories and life with the world humanized him. That was just how he was. His passion for life is inspiring and his love for the natural world is touching. I have a new found respect for this man and his life's work. Looking back, I see how my opinions have changed. I'm still not thrilled with the thought of an infant just feet away from a crocodile, but if anyone knew how to handle a situation like that, it would be Steve Irwin.

This was a great read and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Dec 27, Kirsti rated it it was amazing. I actually remember sobbing in the bath over this book. Bloody Steve Irwin and his love for his wife and kids and argh. I still get a bit teary when I hear True Blue because it reminds me of him.

You, Me and Steve

He was a character and the world seems a little quieter without him in it. I remember this book as a glimpse of the man the world thought they knew, when really there was depth there that Terri just shares pieces of. A great book, and when I want to cry in the bath I'll read it again, haha. Jun 01, Lorraine Lee rated it it was amazing. I could not get enough stories of this very real, unpretentious man and his love of wildlife and family. Even in her grief there is SOOO much faith and hope, it really is a beautiful story.

Jan 19, Nicole Cipri rated it it was amazing. To be honest I was never really a huge fan of Steve or interested in reading this book. My mum purchased it for me whilst visiting Australia Zoo. I never knew how much Steve had done for the wildlife and how much of a truly humble and caring person he was. He was definitely put on this earth for a reason. Captured the life of Steve and his family at its best. I believe he has gained another fan.

Aug 06, Samir Dhond rated it really liked it. I just finished reading this absolutely amazing book and here I am sitting numb. I am not sure if I can review this book without being emotionally overwhelmed. Well, Steve Irwin was a global icon in the movement of wildlife conservation. His contribution to the area of conservation is just so huge that one would fall short of words to describe it. He was a Hero, a Legend the world will always remember. The book is insightful and at the same time extremely emotional in the way I just finished reading this absolutely amazing book and here I am sitting numb.

The book is insightful and at the same time extremely emotional in the way it has been penned down. As I started reading the book, I realized that Steve was a highly formidable person.

You, Me and Steve Lyrics

He fought the odds, the nature and many a red tape to save wild animals and their habitats. Of course, many people have acknowledged him as inspirational, humorous, daring and what not. However, one of the most beautiful aspects of his personality that shines through the book is his sensitivity towards people around him and toward the environment. His heart always stayed with nature, with the eco-system. There is a wonderful incident that is narrated in the book where Terri says that once Steve was bitten on his nose by a snake. He immediately said that if an animal ever bites him, it would be not be its fault but it would be his.

It just goes to prove the immense compassion and love he had for wild animals. He knew that he was in their world trying to study and save them not the other way round. It was fun to read about his courtship with Terri and about his relationship with his fellow colleagues.

It goes to show that one needs to be a spirited, good human being in order to generate so much of momentum in spreading the wildlife conservation message across the globe. People related to him in many ways than we can imagine. On his death, the world mourned. Terri has described ways in which people reached out to her and her family. One of the aspects that I truly liked while reading this book was the way it has been presented. It reads matter of fact, very candid and straight from the heart. He was gentle, sensitive and so emotional. It was wonderful to read about how compassionate and sensitive Steve was as a person.

She also talks about how Steve loved his Dog, Sui. She was his girlfriend, says she.

She would understand everything Steve said to her. I also found it interesting to know that Terri shared a similar bond with Shasta, her dog and Malina, her rescued Cougar. As I was reading the book, a thought overtook me. I wondered about how connected some people are with nature and the eco-system around. Their body language and the electrical charge so to speak in their body convey their relatedness with nature. There is a particular incident that Terri has shared with the readers. She says that once Steve had gone to Indonesia to film Orangutans.

While filming, he decided that it was a good idea for him to be with them in the tree and then do the filming. One of the female Orangutans had a baby. He wanted to go up in the tree and get filmed with all of them.

Steve & Me

A local expert suggested him that it was not a particularly good idea because Orangutans are fiercely protective of their babies. It would be dangerous to go anywhere close by. Regardless, Steve insisted on going up in the tree to get this candid moment captured by the camera. He told this expert that he would be careful and nothing like that would ever happen. Against the advice of this expert Steve went up the tree and sat on a branch.

As expected, the female Orangutan came down thundering to the branch where Steve was seated. She sat next to him. Looked into his eyes straight and for a moment Steve and the cameraman as well as the expert thought that she was going to attack him. However, she put her arm around his shoulders, pulled her baby close and showed it to Steve. Steve told her that she was beautiful and she was taking very good care of her baby. He told her that she was a good mother. Soon, the Female Orangutan went away. Terri says that the animals understood him and his language as well.

He was at his natural best among them. The book talks about his death very briefly. I am not surprised. I am sure it must be hard for Terri to talk about him and his death. While reading the book, I kept wondering how this woman must be surviving with two young kids without their source of strength, Steve. Terri talks about her dialogue with Bindi when she expressed to see her Daddy one last time. Terri told her that she probably should not go and see him because Steve when saw his mother last on her death, the image of that moment haunted him for a long time every single day.

They shared a bond which was very special and to have that person exit so fast, so suddenly must have been terribly traumatic. She talks about how she strategized on her plans for the zoo with Wes. She talks about fulfilling whatever Steve was doing at that point in time, and then she decided to take up work that all of them had planned on and then she decided to do whatever she wanted to do.

That is quite brave of her! She also highlights the fact that Steve never feared Death and that was one reason he was able to do so much in the area of Wildlife Conservation. The condolence letter at the end of the book is extremely touching as well. After I finished reading the book, I paused and thought about the greatness of this man, Steve who lived Wildlife Conservation all his life. It would not be an understatement if I said that today, the younger generation thinks about Wildlife and its conservation because Steve Irwin was the face they have been inspired by.

His enthusiasm, his excitement, his cheerfulness was infectious. He was the Crocodile Hunter, a real Hero who made a difference to this planet. Read this book for some insightful anecdotes and also for the spirit it conveys. All of us cannot become Steve Irwin for sure but even if we take baby steps in protecting our environment and conserving nature in whichever tiny way we can, then it would be our contribution to the Movement of Wildlife Conservation that Steve Irwin began several years ago.

Sep 06, Kelly K rated it it was amazing Shelves: I absolutely loved this book. All of my childhood feels of watching 'The Crocodile Hunter' on tv came flooding back and how enamored I was watching the Irwins then. Hearing the story of how they met and lived their lives together through Terri's words gave me even more appreciation for what they have done to help animal conservation.

I hope to one day visit the Australia Zoo to see where it all began. Nov 25, Mark Victor Young rated it really liked it. Really enjoyed this homespun tale of life behind the scenes with Steve Irwin. I didn't know anything about Terri, his widow, prior to reading this. Quite an amazing story of how the two found each other and how perfectly matched they were. She's a fascinating woman in her own right and her writing style is clear and conversational. Felt like sitting down for a chat. The book opens with their first meeting in October, Terri, then 27, was in Australia on a quest to find homes for rescued American cougars.

Obviously, a place called the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park did not seem like a good candidate for her cougars. Upon entering the park she noticed the cleanliness of the enclosures and the relative freedom of the animals therein. She noticed the crocodiles before Steve, but after meeting Steve, it was all over for her. That day, they spent a long time talking and she came to appreciate his passion for crocodiles and other animals. Shortly thereafter, she returned for a weekend. Terri then backtracks to fill in the details of her life prior to meeting Steve, especially how she became involved in cougar rescues.

After that, Terri returned to Australia in January, At this point, she actually went out into the bush with Steve to survey crocodiles prior to dams being erected on the Burdekin River. Following the trip, Steve proposed to Terri and she accepted. The Irwins were married on June 4, Instead of a normal honeymoon, Steve received a call about a large crocodile venturing too close to civilization.

Someone had been shooting at it. A documentary film-maker, John Stainton, contacted Steve about the animal and asked him if he wanted to relocate the crocodile. He also wanted to film Steve in action. John and Steve had met in the late s when Steve would help filming commercials that used reptiles. The memoir continues through many of their adventures, both in the bush and with corporate America and Hollywood.

Included in their adventures is the birth of their daughter, Bindi in and son, Robert in Teri tells many wonderful stories of their time together. The reader will clearly come away with a sense of the love and strength they had and felt in each other. But, it made the reading a little uneven. If one is interested in naturalists, wildlife, conservation, or specifically, Steve Irwin, this memoir by his wife will not steer one wrong. Dec 18, Juliette Power rated it it was amazing. Steve Irwin was invincible. A Wildlife Warrior that saved countless lives. Like the rest of the world I reeled in shocked disbelief that this could happen.

But as little Bindi said, even superheroes die. For me, Steve's demise was a stark lesson in mortality, even though I too had experienced the death of a parent as a young child. Along with thousands of others, I made the pilgrimage to Australia Zoo days after his death, to mourn and Steve Irwin was invincible. Along with thousands of others, I made the pilgrimage to Australia Zoo days after his death, to mourn and celebrate the life of this special man. It would have been difficult to write, and perhaps cathartic, I would imagine.

Re-living how they met, fell in love. The birth of their children and naturally, all of their epic wildlife adventures in Australia and around the world. Color photographs grace the middle pages. This book is dog-eared, well-thumbed and takes pride of place in my bookcase. Dec 22, Kathy rated it really liked it. This book was a love story from Terri to Steve. Steve definitely had a personality that drew millions of people to him. However, what I enjoyed most about this book was learning about Terri. Not many women could have jumped into Steve's world and embraced it like she did.

His wife was always in the background. I never gave her much thought and I wondered what this book might have to say. But I was pleasantly surprised. Terry has her own charm and genuineness which comes across through the pages. Terry met Steve when she visited Steve and his parents zoo in Australia during a vacation. After a few months they got married and Terry moved to Australia to be with him. So she was, before she met Steve, a wildlife warrior in her own way.

After she met Steve she was introduced to a bigger world and a passion for Wildlife that matched or even surpassed hers. She assisted Steve in his crocodile hunts and helped him manage the zoo. Through Steve and Me, I got to know a Steve who was as passionate and dedicated as we know him but we also got to know how emotional and vulnerable he was. He did not limit his love only to Crocs, he loved every animal out there and worked for their welfare. There were also a lot of things that I learnt from this book.

The one that gave me goose bumps was when Terri described what Crocodile farming was really like. She also writes about the time Steve was surrounded by controversies-once during the Whale shoot and another during the time he did a croc show with his daughter Bindi in his arms as an infant. I hope his children have the same passion and energy he had and take his legacy forward. Leaving behind her wildlife rescue work in Oregon, Terri traveled to Australia, and there, at a small wildlife park, she met and fell in love with a tall, blond force of nature named Steve Irwin. They were married in less than a year, and Terri eagerly joined in Steve's conservation work.

The footage filmed on their crocodile-trapping honeymoon became the first episode of T he Crocodile Hunter, and together, Steve and Terri began to change the world. A uniquely gifted naturalist, Steve was first and foremost a wildlife warrior dedicated to rescuing endangered animals -- especially his beloved crocs -- and educating everyone he could reach about the importance of conservation. In the hit TV shows that continue to be broadcast worldwide, Steve's enthusiasm lives on, bringing little-known and often-feared species to light as he reveals and revels in the wonders of our planet.

With grace, wit, and candor, Terri Irwin portrays her husband as he really was -- a devoted family man, a fervently dedicated environmentalist, a modest bloke who spoke to millions on behalf of those who could not speak for themselves.
