Fruit Juice Not From Concentrate

That's why grape and apple juice are so much better, they had the consistency of a freeze-pop instead of a big orange baby turd. There's something to be said for the shelf life and storage efficiency of frozen juice-glop. I miss that stuff. Originally posted by Happysin: I generally get "not from concentrate" stuff but I loathe pulp in my juice How did this ever come about?

I mean its not like people have "chunky" milk or Coke with minced bits of stuff. Course I also can't stand chunky peanut butter either. In either case it just seems Originally posted by Scotttheking: I miss it Oh dear FSM, tell me about it!!!! One of the greatest weeks of my life was when my Aunt sent us a box of oranges overnight from FL.

Not From Concentrate

She picked them from the tree in her back yard. Since they weren't "processed" cleaned, polished, etc they looked nasty, but oh the juice.

Originally posted by PsionEdge: Hell, just peel the the oranges and throw them in a blender. Or, if you're feeling sextacular: Sometimes I have non-homogenized milk, and there are little floating bits of butter I fish out and spread on bread, its really tasty.

And my favorite kind of ginger ale is the homemade kind, with fresh ginger, so there are little bits of ginger pulp floating about. I loathe pulp in my juice The part you chew? Same with an apple or a grape or a peach. When you juice those fruits, most of the pulp remains behind but some of it the finer bits is squeezed out with the juice. The reason you don't notice this with apple or grape juice is that those are usually filtered before they're pasteurized and bottled.

You can buy unfiltered apple juice, though, and in my opinion it's the best kind. Juice is a poor substitute for eating fruit. Basically it is sugar water with some vitamins and maybe some fiber if you get the kind with pulp. If you want fruit, eat fruit. The only kind of juice I really endorse is vegetable juice not V8, that's just salt water with ketchup , preferably made at home.

That's only because that much vegetable mass just has too much bulk. It's hard to get all the veggies in a single meal that you can get in a tasty veggie drink like this. I just want to thank all the non-pulp drinkers for allowing beverage producers to offer extra-pulp versions of their product lines for me to take advantage of. Oct 18, Posts: Commercial juices labeled "not from concentrate" are made by juicing the fruit, and then pasteurizing it. This way, the juice takes up less space when transported. Before being packaged and sold, water is added back into the concentrated juice and it's pasteurized.

Processing Options

As long as the process only involves adding the correct amount of water back into the concentrated juice, juice from concentrate has no difference nutritionally than juice not from concentrate. The calorie content will be the same, and the nutrient density of the juice won't be affected, either. However, if additional ingredients are added, like sugar -- often in the form of high fructose corn syrup -- the nutritional profile of the juice will be different due to the additional sugar. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics points out that different brands of juice from concentrate may add different additional ingredients in the juice during processing.

THE SECRET BEHIND NOT FROM CONCENTRATE JUICE!!

For example, one common brand of "from concentrate" apple juice contains only apple juice from concentrate and added vitamin C, while another popular brand of "from concentrate" apple juice contains added sugar. Juice with added sugar may be higher in calories, and will definitely be less healthy.

However, it is important to read the nutrition label, choosing products that contain percent juice without added sugars. Added sugars can be listed as a host of different ingredients, like "corn syrup," "high fructose corn syrup," "dextrose" and "malt.
