Why Are All the Good Teachers Crazy?

I bought the book. It sat around for a few months. I read the book. I laughed some more. I laughed so hard I wet my pants.

Why Are All the Good Teachers Crazy?

This book is irreverent, profane, sometimes muddled, and never PC If you have any experience working in education you will, if nothing else, identify with some of the situations. If you have ever worked in Special or Alternative Education, you may identify with one of the many characters or is it caricatures? You may even secretly wish you could do some of the things that Step has done. FYI, I don't recommend it if you'd like to keep your job, but that's a discussion for other kinds of forums! Other reviewers have panned this book because of the "violence" or the "vulgar language.

Violence and profanity are pervasive in many schools. Look up "teacher beat down" on YouTube sometime. If you can't handle reading this book, the chances are very good that you wouldn't last a day working in an inner city school, alternative education, or EBD program because the "f-word" is the least of your worries.

Being an educator isn't all lollipops and rainbows. I teach science, social studies, and work skills in a high school behavioral program so I feel qualified to offer my opinion on this subject and this book.

I am not a traditional teacher; I'm a guitar teacher. And that has its own set of unique challenges and hard-to-believe stories. I really resonated with Step's reasons for teaching: I had my own experiences with many, many bad teachers, and particularly music teachers, who were doing more harm than good in their "teaching" methods, and did not deserve the title of Teacher including one tenured a-hole. When you care more about your own ego and your paycheck more than the students, it's time to retire or go get another job doing something else.

Teaching, when done with care and passion, is one of the noblest, more influential jobs there is. I'm a musician, so I'm not bothered by profanity. Nor do I find these stories hard to believe. We see some truly weird stuff. It's not in common for me to pick up a book, read a couple chapters, stick a bookmark in it, and put it on a shelf, never to be completed.

But I read this book in less than a week and it's not a short book. There were some passages so funny, or moving, or profound, that I read them aloud to my husband. He went to Catholic school back in the days when you could still beat the crap out of kids for their own good and he loved, loved, loved the parts I read to him. I'm really glad you wrote this book, Step. You have something to say, and some of us are hearing it. Yes, there are too many typos, and from an English major that is unfortunate.

But if people are focused on grammar and typos, they are really missing the big picture.

Do you want something perfect or do you want something ballsy that actually says something? Typos or not, it's a 5-star book. If this were a movie, I'd totally go see it.
