Barren County Schools found out on May 5th that their grants are to be funded for the full amount. In that time, EMS was a relatively new profession, and EMS practitioners had only just started to be recognized as a critical component of emergency medicine and the public health safety net.

In , Barren and Metcalfe Counties were making the transition of relocating the ambulance service from local funeral homes into what is now known as Barren-Metcalfe County Ambulance Service. The service was created in December of and started operation on January 1, Since its birth, a lot has changed in the world of EMS. EMS is now firmly established as an essential public function and a vital component of the medical care continuum. On any given day, Barren-Metcalfe EMTs and Paramedics help save lives by responding to medical emergencies, including heart attack, difficulty breathing, falls, motor vehicle crashes, drowning, cardiac arrest, stroke, drug overdose and other acute illnesses.

Our local ambulance service is capable of providing both basic and advanced level medical care at the scene of an emergency and while en route to a hospital. The dedicated staff at Barren-Metcalfe County Ambulance Service provide care for their patients' medical needs and show caring and compassion to their patients in their most difficult moments. During this special week, we recognize the dedication of our staff to serve the citizens of Barren and Metcalfe Counties.

We Matter: Athletes and Activism

Sam and I were there a month ago and it is indeed quite a sight. This "Cut-Through" project, the dream of Dr. William Mambley, is the largest engineering feat in the US and second in the world only to the Panama Canal. The project eliminated the disastrous flooding of the Big Sandy River by moving a 4-lane highway, a railroad and a river through the mountain. This young buck came to get his picture taken in the daylight. A gentleman always carries an umbrella for a lady. Luna and Redrum stopped their journey long enough to pay their respects to this unknown soldier at the entrance of the Breaks Park.

Early in the morning of Friday, June 16, these three foxes were playing some sort of game in my driveway at sunrise. I was not amused. New Principal at Eastern. Erika began her teaching career at Grayson County High School in where she taught English at various levels and grades. While there, she served as the head cheerleading coach for 8 years, served as department head, and held various leadership roles.

Erika and Jonathan have two daughters; Adalynn 4 and Avery 7 who will become Eastern Wildcats this fall. Her mother, Brenda Johnson, was an English teacher for 33 years in the district, and her father, Leroy Johnson, served as a teacher and assistant principal at Barren County High School for more than 27 years.

Eastern has had a long history of being one of the top schools in the state of Kentucky. The success she has witnessed at her previous school will be seen at Eastern.
