The higher stages of the "I" consciousness come gradually, for once on the Path there is no retrogressio. It is over thirty years since I studied the entire works and teachings of Ramacharaka and even now his knowledge of yoga has proved invaluable in my own life as a Psychologist,Nuro-pathological re-mapping,without his teachings my own self knowledge would be lacking from my own understanding.

Jai Sat Guru Dev. I read this book the first time in It was instrumental in my life long study of Yoga. In a sense I owe it all to "Ramacharaka" and this book. The reading of this book aided me beond words in finding the truths of this exsistance.

A Series of Lessons in Raja Yoga. Non-fiction , Health , Instructional. Show Excerpt this consciousness being attained, he passes to the rank of the Initiates. Reader Reviews Average Rating of 4. Not classical Raja yog, or Ashtanga Yoga, but one articulative man's inventive interpretation of it. It does not deal with the higher or kingly spiritual experiences of yoga. I have purchased several copies of this book through the years and it, of course, is a great resource to have on hand. My only issue with this edition is the size of the print. This smaller print makes the book almost unreadable, therefore useless as a gift.

A SERIES OF LESSONS IN RAJA YOGA

Too bad someone has decided to cut corners on a publication that was perfect as it was. Cutting corners is not always a good idea. This book is ok, it didn't really resonate with me and was hard to read. One person found this helpful. This book was written in the early part of the 20th C. Some of the material seems dated. This is good because it means we have advanced since then.

The book is worthwhile to read. I am not familiar with raja yoga, so I cannot comment on real substance. I can comment on a few things, though.

PUBLISHERS' NOTICE

Our notion of ego has changed since this book was written. It appears that the author borrowed from the new field of psychiatry and its notion of the ego for this book, and for this time. But today, "ego" is a depreciated term, and means something different.

A Series of Lessons in Raja Yoga by William Walker Atkinson

Today "ego" is often a negative, and not a neutral term as it is employed here. Another point is that I believe we have advanced in our views of polarities and opposites. Maybe not as much as I would like. This book treats polarities and opposites like poles of a magnet. But the author falls into the "positive-negative" or "higher-lower" trap and suddenly one pole looks a lot better than the other.

This seems to be an ingrained residue of "good-evil" look at polarity.

I would be better, in my opinion, to leave those all aside that have value judgments associated with them and use something neutral such are "black and red" which some fields of electrical wiring use. Even these terms can have somewhat of a taint, but not nearly as much as "higher-lower" or "positive-negative". The reason the name of these opposites have is because when we use a pair of names where one name has a better reception to its name is that we lose sight that opposites need the other in order to exist.
