Ultimate Beginner Bluegrass Guitar Basics & Beyond : DVD

One person found this helpful. For a basic overview of guitar playing, this book does the trick, but the examples and explanations are not up to par. The CD is okay, but annoying because it all goes too quickly. I learned more from the Mel Bay Chord diagrams than from this book which supposedly explains guitar playing. A good fingerpicking section, but forget about their lead guitar sections, just a bunch of scales, no explanations or anything. Sure, the book goes over some of the basics and there are better books out there but I personally bought this for the CD.

The CD has 3 blues jam tracks that allow you to wail away on your own improvised leads.

Also, if you're having problems tuning your guitar both the book and the CD are a big help. Furthermore, for those of you who have trouble understanding all the little symbols and numbers that make up tablature, Larry Carlton completely defines how to play Tablature on his guitar as you listen to the CD and follow along in the book. I found this to be a pretty decent book for showing you the basics of guitar playing, soloing, etc.

It's probably better if you already know at least a little bit of guitar.. Wicked finger picking section! Introduces topics without prior explanation.

This DVD is better than taking lessons in a class, or even one on one with an instructor because you can pause and replay anything you didn't quite catch. It is extremely detailed and comprehensive.

I haven't even played it all the way through, but after watching a bunch of YouTube videos and even trying a beginner's class, this DVD was the best instruction I've received. The information translates perfectly for a student of accoustic guitar, but it's annoying to hear the notes being demo'd coming from an electric instrument instead of an accoustic guitar.

I was going to return it, but it's really good and hasn't stopped me from learning a lot. This is a great dvd for beginners. Of course nothing beats a real instructor, but this is a great alternative if you want to learn guitar at your own pace on your schedule at a fraction of the cost. The first chapters do alot of thorough explaining and show alot of step by step examples.

    • I know absolutely nothing about guitars or reading music off charts or tabs. This dvd explains everything a beginning guitarist needs to know about charts, tabs, and chords. However certain areas get very very advanced quickly. If you're a slow paced learner like me this can be intimidating. Just go over previous lessons over and over till you feel comfortable before moving on. If you listen to the lessons and follow them exactly, this dvd will help out alot.

    Remember you get out of it what you put into it. This dvd has ALOT of info for new guitarists.
