Then there is James, the hero of the book, a vampyre that has been imprisoned in a dungeon for 20 years, put their by Blaire's mum and her coven. Even though he does hold a grudge, he is a sweet vamp. But honestly the person I was the most fascinated by is Matthew Halkett, a very old vampire and who will be in the next book. I can't wait for his story. Back to the book. James is hungry and not just for blood since he wants Blaire for more.

They do their little dance. Then two more vampires show up and they are not nice at all. They want death and blood. There is danger, passion and at the end we meet up with old friends. Sorcha, who still love to flirt, Elspeth and Benjamin, and Alex, I am starting to get a bit interested in him, he is turning into something nice. The best part about this book is that I just wanted more. I kept turning page after page to find out what is going to happen. The book has no dull moments and there is a flow, and you just want more.

Dare manages to create a new fun series. Old friends, and no you do not need to have read the werewolf books, passion, magic and vampires. A fast read that I enjoyed. I was more enamored by the evil guys story by the end of the book rather than the hero and heroine's story. It all has potential though. I keep coming across books that are border line young adult.

This is one of them. I like YA books If not for a few key words and a few years age difference, this could be considered YA. Every one seemed a little too immature for me. I liked the story line, it just could have been better. I wasn't drawn in that much. I got bored with the love story portion. And I didn't think it was all that suspenseful. Jul 25, Anne rated it it was ok Shelves: A lot of the story rested on some sort of a back story that wasn't explained, but honestly, I didn't care enough to be annoyed with all of the holes. And as long as I'm being honest, I have to admit that I skimmed large hunks of it.

Especially toward the end. Sep 10, Michelle the Romance Witch rated it really liked it Shelves: A very interesting story, historical, paranormal and heartwarming. Lots of funny little twists and turns, passion, and subtle heat. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Jun 11, Wendy rated it liked it Shelves: TO much back and forth, I'm brave, I'm not. I want him, I don't, and on and on. All in all it was a pretty good story, but I will not be reading the rest.

Off a star for the "saving" ending. If you love a vamp, keep it such. Lydia Date creates a full n rich world with wonderful characters! Five Scottish witches all with rich personalities are finding that one special man for each of them. Throw into that some magical powers n friends a bit of paranormals, and you have a book story that plays out smoothly in the mind as if your right there living it with the characters themselves.

Lydia Dare writes so WELL, that before you even realize it, you have just devoured chapter upon chapter to the end of the last page! A wonder book that stands on its own and yet an even more wonderful as a rich n full series. Mar 19, Jennifer rated it liked it Shelves: I didn't realize going in that this is a series that spins off of another series. It is still able to be read as a stand alone.

However, it took me a long time to get into it. Part of that was from all the characters that are thrown at you the first few chapters. It was too confusing, if you've read the other series though I guess you would know who they were already.

Jun 03, Francis rated it it was ok. Jun 12, Daniela Romero rated it liked it. No todo es malo, el libro entretiene, conocer a la protagonista y su magia es interesante pero no es suficiente. Jan 23, Cherie rated it really liked it. There's a very sad part at the end. Nov 09, Christyn rated it liked it Shelves: I didn't know that the two series were connected until I started reading it and I noticed some familiar names pop up.

I will tell you - the dread I felt when I realized it…was rather unnecessary. Saying that I'm going to start with what I liked. I liked that the characters didn't drive me as insane as the two in the previously mentioned book did. Blaire was feisty, with plenty of attitude and confidence perhaps too much at times. James was hot and cold at times but I enjoyed his mostly straight-forward attitude toward Blaire, okay so she twisted him up at times but I enjoyed that about him.

It's nice to see not only the gals getting tongue-tied and befuddled. I enjoyed the banter between James and Blaire as well as Blaire's family and James' sire and friend Matthew.

Blaire's brother Brannock was also adorable. I had mixed feelings about the older brother Aiden. There were also Blaire's coven members - I really like Sorch and Rhiannon and hope to see more of them in the future. Cait I'm on the fence about have been since the Wolf book I read and Elspeth doesn't make as large an impression as the other two, particularly Sorcha. There were times that Blaire did something I considered foolhardy or arrogant on her part. Especially when it came to defending against a threat she knew was there - like leaving without telling anyone, and then promptly getting into danger.

One of the enemies showed her the folly of her actions and James had to save her - this irritated me because we were told constantly about her being a battle-born witch and her competency when it came to fighting. Okay, so it's slightly irrational of me to expect her to take on a vampyre without knowing what they can do but still Blaire controls fire and I so wanted her to really fight back. Instead she was over-confident perhaps because of her own abilities she underestimated her opponent - which is something I hoped she was smart enough not to do.

And then later despite knowing the danger she takes her family and leaves again so she wasn't attacked on the road but she easily could've been. So, a part of me can understand her actions but another part of me is saying - she knows she can't take the on the enemy alone so why would she leave the protection of the only vampire left who can take him on? Some of what kept me from marking this story higher were the questions that were left unanswered - like in regards to why the Witches sealed James there. And why did the other witch not do anything when it came to light?

What was the point to the whole thing? Then there is the issue of James going from being a vampyre back to being a human - I know what the book says but I'm still left going huh? So falling in love changed him from a vampyre to a human - this just didn't make any logical sense to me, I want to know how this happened I want details, I want to understand it and I just don't.

I am still totally flummoxed as to how it happened. I will admit it was unique but I just don't understand it. It wasn't anything mind-blowing but it was a mostly enjoyable if not totally believable - though I suppose that kind of comes with the genre way to pass the time. Even one of the bad guys was sympathetic - I actually really felt for the poor vampyre. While the external plot being the bad guys wasn't very strong, their encounters were kind of weak, there were only four and then we have the reason for the encounters - I mean seriously that was the grudge?

At least there was an external plot to give a bit more to the main relationship developing between Blaire and James. Overall, I'd give this a 3 star rating. I liked it, but didn't love it. I will however read the other books in the series because I really want to see what happens with those particular characters whom I've grown fond of. Oct 03, Book Binge added it. One night James Maitland is surrounded by a coven of witches who then seemed to put a spell on him.

It Happened One Bite

James mentally contacts his friend and maker, Matthew Blodswell, to come and get him. That includes Blaire and her family. James refuses to leave Briarcraig until he knows that everyone is safe but Blaire has other ideas. In a move to keep her family safe Blaire returns with them to Edinburgh.

If you have been reading past books by Lydia Dare then you are a bit familiar with Blaire and her coven. Though this is the first book in the Regency Vampyre series it truly is a continuation of the series that began with the Westfield Wolves. That being said I really did like what Dare did with her vamps! Dare made James and Matthew good vamps and quite likable - they were honorable, protective and fun to read about. You gotta love a vamp with a great sense of humor! The end, with regard to the romance, was well done and I was quite happy with it.

Unfortunately there was a whole issue that had to do with the previous coven members that was left hanging. Overall it was a fun book and delightful read. Feb 20, Marie Z. Johansen rated it really liked it. If I was going to make a choice to buy - or not buy- these books based on the covers alone I can guarantee that they would not have made into my house.

I am not, or so I have thought, a romance, bodice-ripper kind of gal. Lately, however, I have come to realize that many of my beloved historical fiction books are considered to be 'romance' books by those who are in a position to 'know' these categorizing details. I suppose then that it should come as no surprise that a very enjoyable book could If I was going to make a choice to buy - or not buy- these books based on the covers alone I can guarantee that they would not have made into my house.

I suppose then that it should come as no surprise that a very enjoyable book could also lurk between these rather tawdry covers. These are covers that make me want to consider buying a cover so that others won't see what I am reading! This paranormal romance series is a delight; a rollicking romp through a world of romantic possibilities where every one's 'gifts' are appreciated and considered worthy. Beautiful witch Blaire Lindsey's brother Aiden inherits a key to the family inheritance of Briarcraig Castle in the Scottish Highlands.

Unbeknownst to Blaire, this is the ancestral home of the "battle-born" witches. Blaire's mother was a battle-born and Lindsey inherited the battle-born legacy from her. Blaire had no knowledge about this family castle and found it odd that her mother had not passed down any information about it before her death. Blaire has heard rumor that the castle is haunted and, as soon as she and brother's enter the old rooms they feel a strange force at work. Blaire's brothers, Aiden and Brannock, did not inherit the same witchy qualities as Blaire has.

They go about exploring the castle and the town; planning the cleaning and refurbishing of it and meeting and greeting some of the highland locals - even inviting two lovely young women and their father to dinner at the castle. No matter that the family does not, as yet, have a staff or operable kitchen. In the blink of a witches eye they're off to town to hire staff, a cook and supplies. In the meantime Blaire has discovered a locked basement room and, more to the point, she has heard odd sounds coming from the room.

What follows this puzzling discovery is a delightful tale of witches, battling vampyres male and female and werewolves lycans - that can all, when the proverbial chips are down, work together for the greater good. A love story between the last of the great battle ground witches and her vampyre love, James, Lord Kettering!

There is a lot of action, love, and interaction of the species contained in the pages of this book - all of it thoroughly delightful -dare I say spell binding! This series and these authors make me smile - and I want to read more of their inventive, rollicking good tales. If you can get away from the cover this is a truly entertaining, delightful book to while away a couple of the hours.

You can't help but find yourself totally bewitched by the fun and imagination of it all! Mar 30, Johanna rated it really liked it. Paranormal Romance Historic He's lost, trapped, doomed for all eternity Rich, titled, and undead, gentleman vampyre James Maitland, Lord Kettering, fears himself doomed to a cold and lonely existence-trapped for decades in an abandoned castle. Then, beautiful Scottish witch Blaire Lindsay arrives, and things begin to heat up considerably Feisty Blaire Lindsay laughs off the local gossip surrounding her mother's ancestral home-stories of haunting cannot scare off this battle-born witch.

With a mouth like a sailor and a stubborn personality as well, Blaire's brother Aiden doesn't think she'll be able to grab a husband unless she becomes more of a 'lady'. Upon accompanying her brothers to a newly inherited Scotland castle and temporarily leaving her witch coven behind, Blaire discovers some hidden secrets that changes her perceptive on her Mother's past and love. Spooky castles, dark vampires, and historical flashbacks makes Dare's new book a real treat.

It Happened One Bite was a refreshing read since Dare's characters are oddly realistic and yet charmingly headstrong. Since her characters are easy to like, the reader can quickly become absorbed in the mystery, adventure, and romance going on between Blaire and James. For me, James may not be the most dashing male lead out of Dare's supernatural series, but he does have his charms and is very jovial.

Blaire begins the story with a bang since she's very out-going and isn't afraid to speak her mind. No matter how much her brother's reprimand her for her daring behavior, it's very apparent they depend on her a lot; but near the end of the book, Blaire's fire-cracker personality fizzles down somewhat, which was nice since she can come off as a little too-much at times.

The younger brother Brannock wasn't really needed to complete the tale, but his personality added some comical entertainment. The big bad villains in the story were kind of wimps overall. Also found at http: As you can see from the past few entries I have been on a Lydia Dare kick. However, she went a little too far with Also found at http: However, she went a little too far with her pursuit, especially when she convince to the coven to trap James Maitland, the Baron of Kettering.

Once they step into the castle strange things start to happen. As they work on getting the castle fit for company, Blaire stumbles upon where James is locked up. Surprisingly, James finds himself wanting Blaire more than just a meal. The first in the Gentleman Vampire series or Regency Vampire series, depending where you find this book. Anyways, I really liked this book. I mean it was stupendous. Since I stumble upon Westfield Brothers series and found out there were more books by this author I had to continue on my journey.

I love how all the stories tie together. So, it really is worth reading them all in order. There's nothing like coming across a fireball throwing witch, and Blaire being the battle-born witch doesn't let you down. She is one fierce witch. Come on you have to be, if you are going to be hurling fireballs.

Then you have James who is a handsome vampire. You would let him get a nip of you if you met him. I love the dynamic between the two of them. Most men would be intimidated by Blaire, because she can fight better than most men. However, James finds her endearing. Plus, its amusing to watch to stubborn people battle each other with there wits. So, I hope you guys get a chance to check out all of Lydia Dare's books, because they are really enjoyable. Especially, when they tie paranormal and regency together. I hope you are enjoy what your reading and I will talk to you later.

Mar 27, Michelle Undeniably Book Nerdy rated it liked it. The story set in the Regency era in which our heroine, Blaire Lindsey, was a witch and our hero, James Maitland, Lord Kettering was a vampire who had just woken up from a cursed sleep. I really enjoyed the characters in It Happened One Bite. Blaire was a battle-born witch and she was smart, strong-willed, brave and fiercely independent. If Blaire wasn't your typical Regency lady, James was also not your typical vampire either.

He was a gentleman vamp in the truest sense: I thought Blaire and James's had great chemistry together. These two really cared for each other and I liked how they got together. The secondary characters were fantastic as well, especially James's friend the Earl of Blodwell, another gentleman vampire, who was just itching for his own story.

As for the plot, the story opened with Blaire's mom and the coven casting a spell on James because a vision foretold that he will be a danger to her daughter's life in the future. Then, fast forward twenty years later, Blair travels to her mother's ancestral home and felt a strong connection to the house. When she freed James from his cursed sleep, she found out that it was her mom and her coven who did it.

However, what the vision revealed and why the coven had to go to the trouble of imprisoning James wasn't told until the end. There was a bit of mystery in there and also in the other plot plot line in which two vampires were after James for revenge for some reason that wasn't revealed until the end. The pacing was okay, there were some parts that I thought dragged and others that were rushed, but overall it was a good read despite the big reveal in the end that wasn't so big and the romance between Blaire and James was great.

I wasn't sure of the Scottish brogue in the beginning because I've read some romances in the past where it got a little too much but here it was done well. It Happened One Bite was more a light, easy read and there were some great humorous moments in the book. This was my first Lydia Dare read and it won't be my last. Check this book out if you're in the mood for a light vampire romance with great characters. Mar 26, Kristi Books and Needlepoint rated it really liked it. This is the first book in Lydia Dare's new Gentleman Vampire series, with two more books due out later this year.

Where I have previously raved over Lydia Dare's lycans, I have now come to the conclusion that it doesn't have to be lycans to make me love her books - it is just her books!

This was a quick read with quite the romantic conclusion. Blaire is very headstrong and doesn't listen to any man in her life. She had grown up with an abusive drunken father so pretty much raised herself and her brothers. So even though one of her brothers is older than her, she is the one who pretty much rules the roost.

When she discovers the man locked in the cellar of the castle that her brother has just inherited, she not only lets him out, but invites him to stay! Because she is a "battle-born" witch, she thinks that she is able to handle any situation - but she has never been up against vampyres before. It is a good thing that Lord Kettering is taken with her and vows to protect her - as he has a couple of vampyres that have been looking for him for the last 20 years.

Lord Kettering and his good friend and creator Matthew Blodswell aren't your run-of-the-mill vampyres. They are truly the gentleman vampyres that the series suggest. They do not kill for food and they never change a person into a vampyre unless the person wants to be changed.

See a Problem?

They reminded me of the vampires from The Twilight series - difference is that this all takes place in the early 's. Being a paranormal romance, you have to ask about the sex scenes. Yes, there are sex scenes in the book, but I found them to be romantic - the kind you read while sort of holding your breath just waiting for what will happen next. I am definitely a Lydia Dare fan and can't wait for the next book in the series.

This isn't one of those cheesy vampire stories at all!! I laughed a few times and I felt engaged in the story. What I found the most interesting is that Lydia Dare is actually 2 women!

Each one writes 1, words and then sends it to the other one for editing, and that one then writes 1, words and the other edits. It works and I never ever found a crack within their storyline whatsoever. I loved the way he desired Blaire and how he wanted to take care of her. It's one of the sacrifices of having eternal life. For the ability to love? For my readers that enjoy a fun romantic read with characters that you will really come to like, then yes!

This isn't a bodice ripper, though some of the sex scenes are very pleasantly steamy The author's don't use words that turn you off, but instead really put you in the moment of two people who care for each other. Lydia Dare's characters are always entertaining. I enjoyed the interplay and caring between Blaire and James but also between Blaire and her brothers and coven sisters.
