In this drama yet realistic fiction story I have learned to believe in what is right even if you have no support team. When I first chose "The Summer of Riley" I thought it would be a really good book, but it was only ok. I liked the main idea, but at times the book dragged. Over all I would recommend this book if you are a dog lover like me because there is such an emotional connection between William and Riley just like in real life. Emotionally challenging for kids who are dog lovers, but parents take note: Mar 02, Charles rated it did not like it. My wife left me alone too long in the thrift store, and I picked out a bunch of books Jul 28, Josie rated it really liked it Shelves: I have taken on a project of looking for books about divorce for kids. This would be for upper elementary to young middle I think. It's about a boy and his dog.

The dog may be put down for scaring a horse. Its a story of love, that has some tidbits of divorce, the death of a grandpa, friendship, bullies, I feel like it would help children going through a divorce to know they aren't alone. Others ma I have taken on a project of looking for books about divorce for kids. Others may appear to put together and cool, but we are all just doing our best based on what has happened to us in life.

Apr 19, Lorenzo Costanza rated it it was amazing. This book was about an 11 year old boy named Will and his dog named Riley. Riley had been chasing their neighbors horse, the neighbor called animal control and Riley was taken away to get put down. Some of Will's closest friends are supporting him and helping him try to get Riley back. What I liked about this book is how the author used so much detail to describe what was happening.

In the end I felt sad because Riley had gotten put down and Will didn't get to see Riley again. I would rate this book a 5 star and would recommend it to ages 11 and up. The book is about him battling for him to keep his dog and not allow it to go to the pound. Aug 21, Cathy rated it liked it Shelves: Someone gave my husband this book because we have a Golden Retriever named Riley and the dog on the cover looks like a golden. The story of a few kids banding together to try to save a dog isn't exactly what the reader expects and teaches several lessons in a not-too-heavyhanded way. Oct 05, Rhonda K rated it liked it Shelves: My son and I mostly enjoyed reading this.

The topics of euthanasia, bullying, and divorce come up, so there are a lot of talking points for parents or teachers and young readers. Jul 18, Elisabeth rated it it was ok. Pretty uneventful, sad ending! Sep 13, Morgan Roessler rated it liked it. I started this book over the summer and got to page 80 and then never finished it. I really like this book and I am hoping to finish it. This book has gotten a lot more interesting since the first 20 pages. The first 20 pages only explained about the dog and his new family which connected to my story.

William is the little boy and also the owner of Riley.

William has a neighbor named Mrs. Riley got out of the house and was chasing the Sultan which ca I started this book over the summer and got to page 80 and then never finished it. Riley got out of the house and was chasing the Sultan which caused the Sultan to freak out and trip and fall.

She wasn't hurt bad but she hurt her foot and leg. A few days later a couple of men came to William's house and claimed they had the right to take Riley and the right thing to do was put him down. William insisted they shall not take him. I don't think it is right that just because the Sultan fell and hurt itself that this dog needs to be put down.

Riley was going to be killed in five days if William had not come up with something to save his life.

William and his parents questioned the idea of an appeal. During the time and just right before Williams's father had arrived. William always wrote to his dad but his dad never had the time to write back. I am very excited to read the rest of the book and finish it, but as of right now I predict that William will try his hardest and never give up and do everything he can to save the life of his best friend Riley.

The appeal is going to happen. William made posters and Duane Smith and Ellis Porter made opposite cruel posters for the sultan going against Riley trying to save the sultans case. I think it is really rude and should not be allowed for two other people that don't know the Sultan and don't know anything about this case to put up posters only because they dislike William.

William was watching T. V and it was said on T. V, " Be careful what you wish for You might get it. This to me is a true statement. Some things do happen and some happen for a reason. Grace and William had a chance to talk on T. V to try to get people to vote to save Riley's life, but the off-set was, that if William and Grace did, then Duane and Ellis would get the option too also. I think it is smart to be able to have both sides of the stories told, because then people know what to vote for. I am really excites to read the rest of my book to find out if Riley is saved or if her days will be over soon.

I think Riley should have just put a warning and that Duane and Ellis were not allowed to put up posters or talk on T. V because they don't know anything about the situation. Riley didn't do any harm to deserve any of this. I think they should ate this to court and settle it faster before Riley's living days are gone. There were a lot of signatures on the petition, In which 52 of them voted to kill the dog and 48 to save him.

A little while later Mrs. She said "No it's ok I'll be leaving early, we will be stopping on the way to get breakfast. She looked into Williams eyes and said " William, I have something to tell you. William was so happy to hear and thanked her so very much. Peachie left the next day, and William promised he would not let Riley get to the Sultan again. He only wanted to be friends and he did not want to hurt him. I am excited to read the end of my book and see what will happen to all the characters and Riley and how there life is starting new.

Dec 04, Ellielovesanimals erm1 rated it it was amazing. It is about a boy named William, and sadly his grandpa died. One day his mom took him to the animal shelter. He got to pick out a dog. He chose one named Riley. He was a nice and friendly dog. But one day something terrible happened. He ran after the neighbor, Peachie's horse. Where they live it is against the law for a dog to chase or attack an animal. The horses name was Sultan. It was old and was very special to the owner.

That day the police came and took Riley.

They said they would have to kill him. William wanted to save his dog. This book is realistic fiction. The books strengths are the characters and what their thoughts are. William and his best friend Grace want to save Riley. But two teenagers, Duane and Ellis want Riley killed. I liked the book because it was interesting and had a lot of detail. I might have been able to imagine Riley there, being taking care of, given to somebody who lived far away from horses, maybe somebody in Portland, right in the middle of the city.

If you like very good, detailed and interesting novel, I suggest this one. It is a fun easy read. Read the book to find out about what happens to Riley Jan 09, Malerie Ward rated it liked it. The boy creates a unexplainable relationship with the dog, Riley, in just a few days. But then the dog does something that upsets a neighbor extremely.

Riley chases the neighbors horse. The neighbor was mad, but did not complain to an animal agency. A little while later, the same thing happens but the neighbor does complain and Riley is taken away from William to be put down. William tries everything but will he be able to save his dog? This book was decent. It was not the best, but it certainly wasn't the worst. It leaves you wondering whose side you are on, and what you want to happen throughout. The things that I did not like about this book was 1 It drags on and on without anything really exciting happening for a while.

It did get a bit boring at times. So the book was a little all over the place.

So when Riley saw the horse, he ran towards the horse and made the horse fall on the ground, and ended up breaking it's leg.

Then some animal This book is about a young boy who's name is William. Then some animal control came to William's house and told him that they're going to have to put the dog down for a "long time". So, will William save Riley before it's too late? I gave it a four-star, because I really do like the book, but the author could have made a better ending instead of it being sad.

But I really do like this book, it's a good one! I recomend this book to anyone who likes books about a Golden Retriever, and can stand a sad story about a young boy's life.
